When times got really tough, these were the people who stepped up and continued to go to work day in, day out, risking their lives in order to keep the country running and to help those in need. Getty Images The gratitude we as a country feel towards them is immeasurable, and while the Clap For Carers initiative (which saw households clap for the NHS every Thursday at 8pm) was a lovely way to express our thanks, it will never be enough. This was the reasoning behind the new Letters For The NHS scheme, which was created by Soumya Krishna Kumar. The 19-year-old Warwick University student has created an initiative which allows grateful Brits to send a letter to a selected key worker to thank them for their work throughout the ongoing pandemic. Getty Images Those wanting to get involved can sign up to become a volunteer at The Crisis Project’s website, and will then be paired with a key worker they can then write a bespoke letter to. You can also write a letter to a care home resident in the same way. All letters are sent to Soumya, who then forwards them on to the recipient. Equally, if you know someone who deserves to receive one of the letters, you can nominate someone from the NHS, or another key worker, online. Getty Images Another way to help is to donate a mere £1 in order to fund the postage for the letters to be sent. So far, 575 letters have been sent out, and they’ve been having a huge impact. An intensive care nurse, who received a letter, commented: ‘this letter touched me on an emotional level and brought a tear to my eye. Thank you for lifting the spirits of a very tired ITU nurse. I will definitely be nominating my equally exhausted co-workers.’ You can nominate a key worker, volunteer to write a letter, or donate a pound towards the initiative online now.
