Groundbreaking’. It’s one of the most iconic lines from The Devil Wears Prada, but let’s be frank, we could probably quote the whole film if we were put on the spot. Getty Images Andy Sachs, the main character played by Anne Hathaway, has been known to divide fans with her ‘I didn’t have a choice’ excuses and lack of research going into her job interview at Runway with Miranda Priestly. But love or hate her, Andy could’ve been played by an entirely different actress in the 2006 film. During an appearance on RuPaul’s Drag Race, Anne Hathaway revealed she was the ninth choice for the role. Ninth! The actress replied: ‘I will give you some tea: I was the ninth choice for Devil Wears Prada. But I got it! Hang in there, never give up.’ The Notebook and Mean Girls actress Rachel McAdams was reportedly the first choice for the role of Andy following the success of those films, but she turned it down. Speaking to Elle in 2007, McAdams explained her reasons for declining the offer: ‘I’m not going to make movies just to make movies. I have to be passionate about it’. So, who else was in the running? It’s been reported that Clare Danes of Homeland fame and actress Juliette Lewis also auditioned to play Andy. 20th Century Fox/Kobal/Shutterstock This isn’t the first time Anne Hathaway has mentioned she wasn’t the first pick, either. Speaking to Variety, she said: ‘I had to be patient … I wasn’t the first choice’. Unfortunately, it hasn’t been revealed who the other five choices for the part of the aspiring journalist were. It’s hard to imagine Andy as anyone other than Hathaway, who starred alongside stars like Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci in the film, but the actress was determined to land the iconic role. She added how after a meeting about playing Andy, she traced the words ‘hire me’ in the sand of a zen garden plant that belonged to an executive. Short, sweet, to the point – and clearly, it worked.
