As one of the most highly anticipated nights of the year, we all want it to be perfect and sometimes, that ends in disappointment. This year however, popular hotel chain Premier Inn is making sure we get the most out of the big night by celebrating it in the best places. After some extensive research in which they analysed 30,000 New Year’s Eve tweets from 2017, the hotel has predicted which British city is the happiest place to spend the new year in. Much to our surprise, London – which is typically the tourist hub of the UK – didn’t make the top five and nor did Edinburgh. Instead, the list was made up of some surprising but refreshing entries. From Bath to Exeter, here are the top five happiest cities to celebrate New Year’s Eve in the UK. 1 Sheffield Getty Images According to Premier Inn’s research, Sheffield is the place to be for New Year’s Eve. Packed with lively pubs and bars (particularly in the West Street, Carver Street and Division Street areas), the city and its locals know how to ring in the New Year with plenty of laughs. 2 Brighton Getty Images It’s no surprise to see Brighton on the list as anyone who has visited the coastal town will know that it’s a guaranteed good time. While there are endless nightlife opportunities, Brighton also offers alternative ways to celebrate the end of 2018. From events at the British Airways i360 Tower, to hilarious comedy nights, the options are endless. 3 Exeter Getty Images Exeter may not be the first place that springs to mind when you think party but the lovely countryside city has plenty to offer. Not only is it great for an evening out (the Quayside is a hotspot), but its beautiful scenery means you can start the new year with lovely views. Who wouldn’t want that, eh? 4 Bath Getty Images As one of the most beautiful town’s in the UK, Bath offers a beautiful fireworks display at Longleat on New Year’s Eve. And on the special night, the historic Roman Baths transforms into a huge party venue hosting dinner, drinks and dancing. 5 Oxford Getty Images Enjoy a more low key but equally amazing New Year’s Eve in the historic city of Oxford. Enjoy a romantic, picturesque stroll along the river before settling into one of the city’s cosy pubs to jump into the new year, champagne in hand.
