Whether it’s refusing straws with our gin and tonics or taking reusable bags to the supermarket, there are hundreds of small but significant changes we can all make to reduce to amount of plastic we use in our day-to-day lives – and this incredibly popular Lush launch is one to add to the list. 12,000 people have reportedly invested in Lush shampoo bars in just 48 hours, in part thanks to a viral video championing the virtues of the plastic-free product. 40 million people have watched the video so far, and the message about their all-natural ingredients and environmentally friendly ‘naked’ packaging only looks set to spread. Although they look small, shampoo bars are mighty, and are estimated to lasts as long as three average medium-size shampoo bottles – that’s around 80 washes. So for the 12,000 shampoo bars shifted from the shelves recently, that could mean a staggering 36,000 shampoo bottles that won’t end up in the rubbish bin. The £6.50 bars come in a range of ingredients suitable for different hair and scalp types, from Soak and Float, which contains cade oil derived from juniper to sooth eczema and psoriasis, to the beach-inspired Seanik, which uses fine salt and seaweed to improve volume and shine. They moisturise as well as cleanse, but Lush do sell solid conditioner bars if your hair is in need of some additional TLC. You can also get reusable round tins (which cost just £2.50) to store your shampoo in if you’re taking it on your travels. Lush ‘This is the first solid shampoo I’ve used and I love it,’ one online reviewer said of their purchase. ‘The whole family use it and you don’t end up pouring loads down the plug hole. It’s great on hair but it’s also one of the ways we have cut down on plastic use.’ ‘I wasn’t sure about solid shampoo before buying this product as I didn’t know if they would be effective or not,’ admitted another. ‘But I decided to give this one a go and I will never buy another shampoo! ‘It leaves my hair super clean – I have grease-prone hair but even on day two after using this shampoo it still feels and smells clean, plus it makes my bathroom smell like a spa!
