The very sad news, however, is that it’ll be the last one. BBC Following the end of season four last year, viewers of the BBC period drama have been highly anticipating the next chapter of the popular show based on a series of 12 novels by Winston Graham. But it has now been confirmed that the upcoming fifth season, which returns to our screens this Sunday 14 July, will draw the show to an end, making the whole thing very bittersweet. "If your country betrays you, to whom do you then owe loyalty?" The final series of Poldark is coming soon to the UK on @BBCOne. pic.twitter.com/kJkmfgU3xb - Official Poldark (@PoldarkTV) June 30, 2019 The news was first confirmed by Poldark writer Debbie Horsfield who, while talking about the upcoming season in an interview, said: ‘As far as we’re concerned it’s going to be the last.’ On 3 February, the show’s producers Mammoth Screen confirmed that filming had wrapped, saying: ‘Poldark has officially wrapped! Thank you to our cast and crew for being simply brilliant.’ And that’s our final wrap! Thank you for all your support, we can’t wait to show you #Poldark S5 later in 2019 ? pic.twitter.com/QjwpwfKGyG - Official Poldark (@PoldarkTV) February 1, 2019 As dedicated viewers will know, season four was based on Graham’s seventh novel in the series, The Angry Tide, before going on a ten-year hiatus before the eighth novel, The Stranger from the Sea.So what can we expect from the fifth and final season? Ahead of the first episode, the BBC has released some first look images into the new season including shots of both old and new cast members. A few more pictures from wrap! BBC In fact, the official BBC synopsis reads: ‘It is a new century and with it comes the promise of a hopeful future, but the past casts a long shadow over Cornwall. Following the death of Elizabeth, Ross Poldark resolves to put Westminster behind him and spend more time with the people he loves. ‘However, when an old friend emerges with a plea for help, Ross is compelled to challenge the establishment again. As the Enyses rally to join the cause, Demelza must contend with dangers close to home, while George courts corrupt powers whose influence spans the Empire.’ BBC Similarly, speaking about what to expect from season five, the show’s writer Debbie Horsfield said: ‘In The Stranger from the Sea Winston Graham made many references to developments that happened in the ‘gap’ years. Much can also be inferred. ‘There are, of course, also historical events and people of the time, both in Cornwall and in London. Series five will draw on all of these to follow the lives of the Poldarks, George Warleggan, the Enyses, and the Carnes in this intervening period.’ We’re so excited to start this next chapter… #Poldark. Series V. 2019. https://t.co/VNe36LEs0I pic.twitter.com/abEYfWiCWo - Official Poldark (@PoldarkTV) September 10, 2018 Who will be in the cast BBC Initially, there had been speculation that due to the possible time jump, the main roles could be re-cast, with another actor filling Aidan Turner’s britches as Ross – a move that would make sense considering the huge time jump in the series making Turner’s protagonist 50-years-old at the time the new action starts. But before you go crying into your pillow, this is just a rumour, and Aiden Turner will of course be returning for season five – the show just wouldn’t be the same without him. Other key cast members including Eleanor Tomlinson who plays Demelza will also be coming back for the final series. When will Poldark season 5 air The wait is almost over as Poldark will be back on our screen this Sunday, 14 July at 9pm on BBC One.
