In particular we love that podcasts provide a chance to listen in on frank, honest and supremely educational conversations from experts in their field. Right now, with the Black Lives Matter movement continuing to swell as it exposes our systemically racist society, many of us are looking for podcasts that discuss race and racism to educate ourselves on the matter. So we’ve rounded up just a few of the best podcasts out there that provide thought-provoking conversations on race, black experiences and the Black Lives Matter movement. Podcasts about race to download now About Race with Reni Eddo-Lodge Acast Reni released her bestselling book Why I’m No Longer Talking To White People About Race to great success, and her podcast aims to take that conversation even further. Recorded in 2018, each of the nine episodes is sadly just as poignant today – featuring key voices from the last few decades of anti-racist activism, Reni looks at the recent history that lead to the politics of today. Listen to About Race with Reni Eddo-Lodge Black Gals Livin’ Acast Hosted by Victoria Sanusi and Jasmine Braithwaite, Black Gals Livin’ hears these two best friends discuss everything from mental health to pop culture and life in general, all from a black girl’s perspective. It won Best Podcast at the first Brown Sugar Awards last year and has amassed thousands of followers since its inception in 2018. With new episodes coming every Monday, this is one to add to your weekly podcast roster ASAP. Listen to Black Gals Livin’ The Stoop Acast Hosted by journalists Leila Day and Hana Baba, The Stoop gets under the skin of the stories that aren’t always given the space they deserve in mainstream media. Starting conversations on what it means to be black and how we talk about blackness, Leila and Hana share the lesser-heard stories from across the black diaspora. Listen to The Stoop No Country for Young Women Acast This BBC-produced podcast is hosted by friends Sadia Azmat and Monty Onanuga and explores ‘life, love and work in a white man’s world’. Raw, topical and extremely funny, guests have included BBC 1Xtra breakfast presenter Dotty, Queenie author Candice Carty-Williams and Little Mix’s Jade Thirlwall to discuss their experiences as British women of colour. Listen to No Country for Young Women Say Your Mind Acast Say Your Mind is hosted by multi-hyphenated powerhouse Kelechi Okafor, who shares her unique, hilarious and often potty-mouthed takes on everything from tarot to Oprah to current events. This week saw the podcast release its 100th episode, so it’s the perfect time to join the conversation and give it some love. Listen to Say Your Mind CODE SWITCH Acast A podcast from NPR, CODE SWITCH tackles big conversations about race in a fearless manner. It takes its name from the idea of changing your behaviour in order to fit in better, something black people experience all too often to fit in with their ‘white’ surroundings. Hosted by journalists of colour, it’s predominantly skewed towards a US audience, but the explorations of how race impacts every part of society, ‘from politics and pop culture to history, sports and everything in between’ are still fascinating and eye-opening. Listen to CODE SWITCH Come Through with Rebecca Carroll Acast Beginning just earlier this year in April, this election year special series sees Rebecca Carroll navigate 15 essential conversations with great thinkers, writers and artists about how race is at the centre of every issue, from healthcare and jobs to climate change and the media. Faith, representation, white fragility and more are all explored as Rebecca chats to guests including Ava DuVernay and Issa Rae. Listen to Come Through with Rebecca Carroll Mixed Company Acast With backgrounds in advertising, hosts Kai and Simeon unpack the uncomfortable conversations surrounding diversity and inclusion in the workplace, especially in the creative industries. They speak candidly and critically about who’s getting it right, who’s getting it wrong and everything in between. Listen to Mixed Company Her Style Secrets Her Style Secrets Hosted by cousins Amber Leaux and Prinny Rae, this fashion and lifestyle podcast is self-described as ‘MOTD for fashion’. The pair discuss trends and celeb and personal styles as well as giving fashion tips – but episodes 31, 32 and 33 are particularly poignant as they discuss the Black Lives Matter movement, racism and cultural appropriation and how each intersects with the world of fashion and beauty.
