YOU Magazine Fashion Beauty Celebrity Health Life Relationships Horoscopes Food Interiors Travel Home Beauty BEAUTY KNOWHOW Why we can t resist a bolder woman By You Magazine - November 29, 2020 Hot lips, bright eyes and bonkers wigs – Schitt’s Creek star Catherine O’Hara is our new beauty icon. When TV comedy Schitt’s Creek swept the board at this year’s Emmys, it went from being a cult favourite to a global smash hit, almost overnight. And deservedly so – the writing is brilliant and it’s regularly laugh-out-loud funny. But it’s often Catherine O’Hara’s character, Moira Rose, who has me transfixed with her heavily kohled eyes, shimmering eyeshadow and bold, red lips. Seeing an ‘older’ woman – Catherine is 66 – having fun with her make-up (and wigs and costumes) is a joy to behold. AP_Images/POP TV Despite the beauty industry’s inclusivity leaps, all too often age is left out. ‘It’s a relief to see an older face representing glamour and being beautiful,’ agrees make-up artist Mary Greenwell, 60. ‘Old is beautiful, too, not just youth.’ Comedy Central / The Hollywood Archive It’s all very well for a TV character to go OTT on the make-up front, but how best to work this in real life? ‘The bright mouth and smoky eye together can be ageing – whether you’re 25 or 65,’ says Mary. Try softening the look with a nude lipstick that’s two tones darker than your natural lip shade (in the show, make-up artist Lucky Bromhead uses Mac’s Ruby Woo, £17.50, maccosmetics.co.uk). Alternatively, try Mac’s nude Kinda Sexy (£17.50, as before). For fuller-looking lips outline with Maybelline Color Sensational Shaping Lip Liner in Nude Whisper (£3.99, boots.com) or Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat in Pillow Talk (£17, charlottetilbury.com). Cbc/ITV/Kobal/REX/Shutterstock For eyes, opt for a kohl pencil as ‘they’re easier to use and smudge so they don’t look too hard’. And, when applying, remember Mary’s mantra: ‘outwards and upwards’. Maybelline Colorshow Kohl Eyeliner (£2.99, boots.com) is a good choice. As for lids, stick to powder shadows in flattering taupes and shiny golds such as Mac Eyeshadow in Omega (£16, maccosmetics.co.uk) and Nars Duo Eyeshadow in Alhambra (£25, lookfantastic.com). Cbc/ITV/Kobal/REX/Shutterstock Getting creative with your look isn’t just about make-up. Madonna, now 62, has had her hair dyed pink by colourist Nicola Clarke. Mary Greenwell has done the same. ‘It can make you feel – and look – ten years younger,’ she proclaims. ‘And it’s fun!’ Want a pout with extra clout Another lipstick worth checking out–andonewithabig environmental mission – is by new brand Highr Collective. Using greener energy for production and offsetting carbon emissions is the latest focus for beauty brands looking to increase their eco credentials. And for its first batch of lipsticks, Highr Collective saved and offset 13.1 metric tons of carbon emissions. The lipstick cases contain a built-in mirror and, though they will be refillable, currently you can return them to the brand for recycling. Highr Collective is also vegan: it uses plant-based butters: shea, cocoa and candelilla (I find it moisturises lips really well) and also plant-based dragon’s blood mineral pigment instead of carmine (ground-up cochineal insects) to create red shades. It’s also PETA-certified cruelty free. The lipsticks cost £22 each, from highrcollective.co.uk. People keep asking me… …if I rate Rihanna’s Fenty skincare range. The simple answer: I’m very impressed by it. Official star of the show is its Hydra Vizor Invisible Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF30 Sunscreen (below, £30). It’s a brilliant hybrid – super moisturising, suitable for all skin tones, wonderfully feather-light – and has a gentle watermelon scent. It’s also reef-friendly and refillable (bonus point for that). For me, though, Fenty’s breakout star is Fat Water Pore refining Toner Serum (£25), a sort of gloopy lotion or light gel texture that works to even skin tone and is also a great hydrator, leaving skin looking plumped and dewy. Lastly, its Total Cleans’r (£20) gently foams and works a treat but, for me, the cherry and coconut aroma is offputtingly sweet, so probably more suited to younger (or sweeter) tastes. But overall there’s so much to love about this range and I really do recommend it. fentybeauty.com RELATED ARTICLESMORE FROM AUTHOR You could get paid to test Liberty’ s Beauty Advent Calendar People are obsessed with this Revlon hair drying tool A new drop of Boots Star Gifts has landed for Christmas 2022 Popular in Beauty 8 of the best sets of press-on nails to see you July 6, 2020 The nail polish worn by Meghan Markle on her wedding day July 27, 2020 Holly Willoughby’ s go-to eye serum is a £6 bargain August 18, 2020 John Lewis has confirmed the line-up for the next Virtual Beauty September 10, 2020 Lush just added to its bestselling Sleepy range with a dreamy September 30, 2020 These are the UK s favourite fragrances starting from just £8 June 22, 2022 These are the bestselling fragrances at Boots right now November 18, 2020 Olay’ s bestselling Regenerist face cream is better than half price on March 8, 2022 This is the £4 90 concealer Holly Willoughby uses to transform her January 20, 2021 Edwina Ings-Chambers Big love for these little labels February 14, 2021 Popular CategoriesFood2704Life2496Fashion2240Beauty1738Celebrity1261Interiors684 Sign up for YOUMail Thanks for subscribing Please check your email to confirm (If you don't see the email, check the spam box) Fashion Beauty Celebrity Life Food Privacy & Cookies T&C Copyright 2022 - YOU Magazine.
