YOU Magazine Fashion Beauty Celebrity Health Life Relationships Horoscopes Food Interiors Travel Home Fashion This is the secret message Princess Diana had written on the heel of her wedding shoes By You Magazine - July 30, 2021 It’s hard to believe it’s been a whole 40 years since the most anticipated wedding of the time – that of Princess Diana and Prince Charles. The royal couple tied the knot on 29 July 1981, when the world watched Diana step out in what would become one of the most-talked about wedding dresses ever. Getty Images The ‘people’s princess’ emerged outside of St Paul’s Cathedral in a silk taffeta gown, decorated with antique lace. Trailing behind Diana was a huge 25 foot train attached to her dress, which is currently on display at Kensington Palace for the first time in 25 years. But, there’s one part of Lady Di’s wedding outfit that had remained a secret… until now. It’s likely that not many of us actually know what the bride’s shoes looked like. After all, we couldn’t get a proper glimpse of them under her iconic dress. The wedding shoes Princess Diana wore were made from suede and had a small heel. They were also adorned with 542 sequins and 132 pearls in a heart-shaped pattern. Getty Images It turns out the pretty shoes Princess Diana wore on her wedding day were made with a special secret message, too. A small ‘C’ and ‘D’ were painted underneath the small heel on each shoe, as a touching tribute to her betrothed. Celebrity cobbler Clive Shilton revealed the information to the Daily Mail. He recalled how designer Elizabeth Emanuel had told him to come and meet a ‘special client’. There, he found Diana waiting to have her feet measured. ‘[Diana] was a very shy, sweet, smiley-eyed young girl… Her main concern was that she wouldn’t appear taller than Prince Charles, and because she was very tall – 5’10” – the shoes would have to have a low heel,’ he said. Clive Shilton added: ‘No one even saw the bottom of the shoes, but it was important to us that they looked fantastic. You would have seen much more of them if she’d tripped!’ Getty Images Of course, we all know how Charles and Diana’s marriage ended. But we still love to see how the royals sneak in secret, special touches to their outfits.
