Kensington Palace took to Twitter to announce that Claire Ptak, the owner of London-based bakery Violet Bakery, will be responsible for making the sponge that Harry and Meghan will cut on their big day. It will be covered with buttercream and decorated with fresh flowers.’ Claire was raised in California, where duchess-to-be Meghan also hails from, and the pair have a prior connection, as Meghan interviewed Claire for her former lifestyle website The Tig. Kensington Palace added that ‘Prince Harry and Ms. Markle are looking forward to sharing the cake with guests at their wedding at Windsor Castle on May 19th.’ ‘I can’t tell you how delighted I am to be chosen to make Prince Harry and Ms Markle’s wedding cake,’ Claire said of the news. ‘Knowing that they really share the same values as I do about food provenance, sustainability, seasonality and most importantly flavour, makes this the most exciting event to be a part of.’ Getty Claire’s appointment has also been given the seal of approval by celebrity chef Nigella Lawson, who tweet that she was a ‘good choice!’ shortly after the revelation was made. The fresh, spring-inspired cake will be a departure from the standard set by Harry’s brother Prince William and his bride Kate Middleton, who tied the knot in April 2011. The couple opted for a traditional brandy-soaked fruit cake crafted by local baker Fiona Cairns, which sat alongside a quirkier chocolate fridge cake made with Rich Tea biscuits, chocolate and nuts, inspired by William’s favourite treat as a child.
