YOU Magazine Fashion Beauty Celebrity Health Life Relationships Horoscopes Food Interiors Travel Home Fashion The key trends from LFW AW18 By You Magazine - February 21, 2018 London Fashion Week is known for its individuality, craftsmanship and tendency to break the rules. AW18 did not disappoint with Emilia Wickstead clashing prints, Marques Almeida showcasing statement slogans and Mary Katrantzou designing statement silhouettes. Reinvention was also key with Erdem introducing texture to floral prints and rich layers unveiling themselves at Toga. Mix and match prints Victor Virgile/Gamma-Rapho Victor Virgile/Gamma-Rapho A perfect example of breaking the rules, a mismatch of prints took over the capital’s runways. Emilia Wickstead demonstrated how this trend is workwear appropriate by combining stripes and checks – the rule is to make sure the prints are from the same colour palette. Delpozo had some fun by looking to the 60s for inspiration with a cream polka-dot blouse under a colour blocking pinafore featuring bright pink and warm brown. Peek-a-boo layers Estrop/WireImage Estrop/WireImage Previous collection staples were revamped with peek-a-boo layers popping up on the catwalks. Roksanada used a cut-away top layer and the movement of the material to blend together the citrus yellow and pastel pink of her satin dress. Toga blended together elements of the ‘heritage’ look with rich-coloured scarves peeping through the cut-out holes and asymmetrical hem of her back-to-front blazer. Structured silhouettes Victor Virgile/Gamma-Rapho Estrop/WireImage Demonstrating the brilliant craftsmanship of London, structured silhouettes added a fierceness to the AW collections. Taking inspiration from the East, Mary Katrantzou’s jacquard jacket accentuated the female form with a cinched-in waist and wide hips. Rejina Pyo took a slightly more relaxed approach with an oversized tailored jacket that featured extra-large lapels and balloon sleeves. Slogans Victor Virgile/Gamma-Rapho Victor Virgile/Gamma-Rapho In a society where we all have empowering and strong statements to say, designers let their clothes do the talking as well. Ports 1961 demonstrated their pride in British fashion by sending an oversized ‘Made in England’ scarf down their runway and Marques Almedia reminded us of the power we have as women with a handwritten ‘Power Woman’ message printed onto an oversized sweater. Textured florals Ian Gavan/BFC Ian Gavan/BFC Proving florals aren’t just exclusively for spring and summer, the popular print was reinvented in a new dramatic way for the season. Both Erdem and Preen by Thornton Bregazzi contrasted light coloured flowers with black material and added texture with feather trimming. Erdem’s string shopper bag made the look day time appropriate while Preen’s polka-dot gloves are the perfect nighttime accessory.
