YOU Magazine Fashion Beauty Celebrity Health Life Relationships Horoscopes Food Interiors Travel Home Life The cheapest European city break for 2019 has been revealed By You Magazine - March 11, 2019 The Lithuanian capital Vilnius has been voted the most affordable city to visit in Europe for 2019. The Post Office’s annual City Costs Barometer has revealed that Vilnius is the cheapest place to visit this year, based on a comparison of the average prices that holidaymakers have to pay for certain items and activities. These include an evening meal for two with wine, and two nights’ three-star accommodation for two adults. 48 European destinations were compared, and Vilnius came up the cheapest. Rex Features In second place was Belgrade, Serbia, and third was Warsaw, Poland. Surprisingly, last year’s cheapest destination, Krakow, Poland was only 13th this year. At the other end of the financial spectrum was – perhaps unsurprisingly – a Scandinavian destination. Known for its pricey attributes, a city break in Reykjavik was priced at £462.61, in comparison to Vilnius’ £147.35. London also came out on the pricey side, costing £364.07 for a short break. Rex Features The top ten most affordable cities to visit in 2019, according to the Post Office, are as follows: 1. Vilnius, Lithuania – £147.35 2. Belgrade, Serbia – £151.57 3. Warsaw, Poland – £160.35 4. Istanbul, Turkey, £166.83 5. Bucharest, Romania – £167.74 6. Porto, Portugal – £172.60 7. Riga, Latvia – £178.60 8. Bratislava, Slovakia – £182.02 9. Moscow, Russia – £186.87 10. Prague, Czech Republic – £190.19 Andrew Brown from Post Office Travel Money told Harper’s Bazaar that it’s actually easier than we may initially think to score a cheaper European city break: ‘Canny travellers can save hundreds of pounds by comparing the cost of accommodation and picking a city where hotel prices are low and where meals, drinks and sightseeing prices are also cheap,’ he said. ‘This applies to most cities in Eastern Europe but also to Porto, Athens and Lisbon.’ Vilnius is known for its medieval Old Town and traditional Baroque architecture. There are many tourist draws for visitors of the city, including the Trakai Island Castle, Gate Of Dawn, and many churches and cathedrals, steeped in history.
