YOU Magazine Fashion Beauty Celebrity Health Life Relationships Horoscopes Food Interiors Travel Home Interiors John Lewis is expanding its furniture rental service after the first collection was gone within 48 hours By You Magazine - July 22, 2021 With sustainability firmly on everyone’s minds right now, attitudes are swiftly changing with regard to renting goods, particularly when it comes to our clothes. Now, John Lewis is taking that mission one step further by expanding its first furniture rental service with Fat Llama. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Fat Llama (@fatllamahq) Following the successful rental trial with Fat Llama that saw almost all of the rental collection gone within the first 48 hours, the expanded range has now doubled to offer over 200 lines, including some of John Lewis’ bestsellers from sofa beds to desks, bed frames and office chairs. Previously only available in London, the service will now be expanded outside of London too, with prices starting from as low as £6. How does it work? You can rent John Lewis furniture for twelve months at a time, followed by the possibility of purchasing the product (the prior payments of which will be deducted from the purchase price). Simply shop the products via Fat Llama’s ‘Flex Rental’ website and all the available furniture will be matched to your location. ‘We’re seeing a real shift in consumer behaviour towards usership rather than ownership, the weak signals were already there pre-covid, with the emergence of car-sharing schemes, hot-desking and services like Airbnb, but the pandemic has turbo-charged this with an almost back-to-the-future move towards sharing, reusing or trading within communities or groups – renting a dress or sofa is the modern-day equivalent of borrowing sugar from next door,’ says John Vary, Partner & Futurologist at the John Lewis Partnership. Nicola Waller, Partner & Head of Buying at John Lewis Home Furnishings added: ‘It is also a sustainable choice for our customers and the expansion of our rental scheme reflects our ambition to offer more sustainable ownership options and forms part of the commitment we made to our customers that all of our John Lewis product categories will have a ‘buy back’ or ‘take back’ solution by 2025.’ Offering a more sustainable solution to furniture shopping and an easier way to test and try furniture before you buy it, John Lewis’ rental furniture rental service is a step in the right direction and set to be a big success.
