There are a whole host of incredible destinations you can visit on even the tightest of travel budgets. Getty Images A new survey from TotallyMoney has revealed the top three most affordable cities to visit in 2020, after researching and ranking the value of 45 European destinations. The researchers factored in things such as the cost of accommodation, flights, eating out, average temperatures, and the number of free tourist activities (such as tours) each country had to offer when compiling the list. They then gave each city a score out of a scale from one to ten and eventually ranked them all from least expensive to most expensive. Getty Images Lucky for us, some very popular cities came out on top as the most purse-friendly places to book. In fact, the number one spot was taken by Madrid, which scored a total of 7.6 out of 10 and turned out to have the best value for money across all the categories it was tested in. The Spanish city was closely followed by Lisbon, which came in as the second best and Greek capital Athens which was right behind it in the third spot. Valencia in Spain and Antalya in Turkey made up the rest of the top five. TotallyMoney The most affordable city breaks for 2020 1. Madrid 2. Lisbon 3. Athens 4. Valencia 5. Antalya 6. Naples 7. The Turkish capital scored the highest for those wanting to eat well on a budget, with a total of 8.1. Meanwhile, Russian cities St Petersburg and Moscow also scored highly for affordable food and drink, respectively scoring 7.8 and 7.7.
