This year, the brand has opted for Pantone 19-4502 Classic Blue, which is in stark contrast to its bright and bold coral hue of 2019. So why Classic Blue? Every year, Pantone chooses a colour that somehow relates to the state of the world at the time. Last year’s decision to propel ‘Living Coral’ into the spotlight undeniably had something to do with our increasing awareness over sustainable living to aid our oceans and dying coral. Pantone This year, Pantone has described their chosen shade as ‘a reassuring presence instilling calm, confidence, and connection,’ and explained that these are all qualities we undeniably crave in the current cultural climate. ‘We are living in a time that requires trust and faith. It is this kind of constancy and confidence that is expressed by PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue, a solid and dependable blue hue we can always rely on,’ commented Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute. With political ambiguity, climate chaos, and a dependence on the digital age, Pantone have brought us a shade that promotes concentration, resilience, and reflection. As with all of Pantone’s yearly decisions, the Colour Of The Year will no doubt have a monumental impact on everything from the fashion and beauty industries, to food, packaging, and interiors. This year, the experts in colour have also taken their responsibility one step further, and made the Colour Of The Year a sensory experience, rather than just a visual one. As well as being able to see the colour, Pantone want us to be able to smell, hear, taste, and feel Classic Blue. They’ve partnered with the likes of Audio UX and The Inside to come up with sensory explanations of Classic Blue. The sound, for example, is Vivid Nostalgia, while the texture is soft and velvety. The shade also tastes mature and ripe, and smells like blue water, sea salt, and airy sky.
