YOU Magazine Fashion Beauty Celebrity Health Life Relationships Horoscopes Food Interiors Travel Home Celebrity Emotional ties actress Tracy-Ann Oberman on family heirlooms female friendships and feel-good fashion By You Magazine - July 17, 2017 By Fiona Mccarthy Actress Tracy-Ann Oberman I must have been a magpie in another life because I love anything that shines. These Rupert Sanderson heels are as great for red-carpet events as they are thrown on with a pair of jeans. I married Rob [Cowan, a music producer] in 2004 and we bought these tabla drums during our second honeymoon in Kerala, South India. We trekked them round the country with us and I was sure he wouldn’t look at them twice when we got home. Perhaps to spite me, he’s now a proper tabla master. I treated myself to these star earrings at Sara Lauchlan’s boutique Viola for my birthday about ten years ago. When I wear them, I feel happy, lucky and protected. This mug, from filming series three of Channel 4’s Friday Night Dinner [in 2014], reminds me of the special friendships I have with other women in the business who are also juggling being working mums, such as Tamsin Greig [I play her sister Val in the series]. They are what spurs me on. I had my daughter Anoushka, ten, when I was 40. I’d always been told I might not have children at all, so I bought these silver booties for her to wear because they summed up everything I felt about her when she was born. Anoushka made this piece of artwork when she was about six – she captured all of us perfectly. She has taught me great patience and capacity for love, and constantly reminds me how quickly the years go by. It’s important for me to not be so driven by work that I miss things with her. These silver candlesticks are an heirloom from my grandmother, who fled from Belarus to the UK at 14 and met my grandfather on the journey. They symbolise the love and serenity of our Friday night family dinners. It was a dream come true to perform in Edmond with Kenneth Branagh at the National Theatre in 2003. I’d wanted to act for as long as I can remember. On my first day out of drama school I joined the Royal Shakespeare Company and did a voiceover, and haven’t been out of work since. I received this wonderful award in 2005 for my character Chrissie Watts in EastEnders. I managed to slip an Issa dress into Chrissie’s wardrobe – Pam St Clement once asked me: ‘What the bloody hell are you wearing?’ I had some great moments playing her, especially murdering Dirty Den, so I accepted it for both of us. I always keep mementos from my roles. This jewellery and badge are from playing Yvonne Hartman in Doctor Who in 2006. She was an interesting character – neither a villain nor a victim – and it was great fun working with cybermen and daleks. Tracy-Ann stars in Fiddler on the Roof at the Chichester Festival Theatre until 2 September.
