The Princess of Wales attended the 1996 Met Gala in New York wearing a stunning navy slip dress designed by Dior; but according to MailOnline, she almost made a last-minute outfit change as she feared son Prince William, aged 14 at the time, would think it was ‘too revealing’. Getty Images Friends of the Princess of Wales say she always wanted to ensure that her two children has as ‘normal’ a childhood as possible: ‘she made sure that they experienced things like going to the cinema, queuing up to buy a McDonalds, going to amusement parks, those sorts of things that were experiences that they could share with their friends,’ Patrick Jephson, Diana’s chief of staff for six years, revealed to ABC News previously. It’s therefore unsurprising that she shared the same concerns as mothers across the country – including what eldest William and Harry, two years his junior, would think of her wardrobe choices. At the time the dress was created, British designer John Galliano had just been appointed creative director at the fashion house, and create the dress for Diana before starting work on his first collection. Getty Images Despite the ‘boudoir style’ being a departure from her usual style, Diana did eventually wear the lace-trimmed gown to the event, and it went on to become so iconic that its currently on display at the V&A’s current Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams exhibition, which is open until mid-July. Accessoring the look with drop earrings, a pearl art-deco choker, tights and simple black pointed shoes, she looked radiant as ever – and we’re sure William absolutely agreed.
