My local store just conjures up memories of drab carpets and dodgy lighting. That being said, they had a cafe, which was pretty great. Person singing outside not included. Heartbreak rating: 2 If you ever needed new electricals once upon a time Dixons was the place to go Sopa Images/SOPA Images/LightRocket / Via Getty Images Dixons was honestly a moment in time! Did you know that it's now been rebranded as part of Currys, so you can still shop your fave gadgets, just without the '90s-esque storefront. Heartbreak rating: 3 Maplin was once a retail park stalwart but their stores eventually closed a few years ago Matthew Horwood / Via Getty Images While I'm sure Maplin sold some rather useful things, the idea of being made to walk around there filled teenage me with dread. All those gadgets and wires — I just wanted to meet my friends for a McDonald's milkshake and some fries tbh. For anyone who's interested, it would appear you can still shop at Maplin online. ... You're welcome! Heartbreak rating: 4 Whether you needed a new P E kit or you just fancied some new kicks once upon a time JJB Sports was your go-to Cate Gillon / Via Getty Images Ah, I'd recognise that iconic blue and green logo any day! If you say you didn't pass the time in this place by throwing around tennis balls or pretending to golf on those mini golf turfs, just know I don't believe you. Heartbreak rating: 5 Safeway would probably have been wayyy more exciting to adult me but it s still a fallen icon of the British high street Nicolas Asfouri / Via Getty Images So my memories of Safeway are hazy, and I loathed food shopping when I was younger, so it's safe to say it probably wasn't my fave. A reliable source has informed me that they had a crèche for kids to play in whilst their parents/guardians shopped, which sounds kinda lit tbh. Adult me would definitely love a long romantic walk down the wine aisle though.Heartbreak rating: 6 Shout out to everyone who remembers traipsing around Tie Rack as a youngster Stephen Kelly/PA Images / Via Getty Images As someone who's probably not part of Tie Rack's target demographic, I can only say I have "fond" memories of loitering around the place waiting to get taken for a chocolate-shaped reward for my patience. Miss you, Tie Rack. X Heartbreak rating: 7 Barratts shoes went into administration after years of being a familiar fave on the British high street Yui Mok/PA Images / Via Getty Images I bet you'd forgotten about Barratts shoes, huh? The stores haven't been around since the mid '00s, but it's amazing how the memories come flooding back. Who remembers heading out to get new school shoes and begging your parents for light-up trainers instead? I kinda miss that funny foot measuring tool, too. People with kids, does it still exist? Heartbreak rating: 8 I had almost forgotten that C& A clothing shops existed until now Sopa Images/SOPA Images/LightRocket / Via Getty Images Upon Googling, it's become clear to me that C&A does still exist, but it withdrew its stores from the UK back in the noughties. It wasn't my cup of tea back then, but there's something very nostalgic about that minimalist logo, I can't lie. Heartbreak rating: 9 Mothercare closed all of its UK stores but still trades via its website and abroad Sopa Images/SOPA Images/LightRocket / Via Getty Images My only memories of going into Mothercare were to buy a gift for anyone I knew who had a baby. It wasn't somewhere I'd spend much time, but it's definitely a place that holds special memories for a lot of people! Heartbreak rating: 10 And hands up Who remembers the shoe store Dolcis Fiona Hanson/PA Images / Via Getty Images The shops might've closed some years ago, but when I heard the name Dolcis, the memories came flooding back. Also, their rather chic logo is still serving up immaculate vibes, imo! Heartbreak rating: 11 Toys R Us was beloved by many a 90s kid and who could forget its ultra colourful and instantly recognisable store front Nurphoto / Via Getty Images Toys 'R' Us was honestly THE most amazing place I went as a kid. There were seemingly thousands of rows of toys, and each row was, like, 50 feet high (okay, I was a kid, so I'm exaggerating a little). I'm gutted that kids today don't know the sheer ecstasy of all those toys in one aircraft hanger of a place! RIP Toys 'R' Us. Heartbreak rating: 12 Next up pick n mix stans this one s for you It s of course none other than Woolworths Nathan Stirk / Via Getty Images If you don't remember gleefully perusing the sweeties aisle whilst your parents looked at all the boring stuff, then we can't be friends. Woolworths does still exist around the world, FYI, just not in Old Blighty. Heartbreak rating: 13 Friday nights wouldn t have been the same if it wasn t for Blockbuster Tap to play GIF Tap to play GIF Fox When your parents took you to Blockbuster on a Friday after school, you just knew it was going to be a good weekend! Who else remembers the sheer heartache when the time came to return your fave movie? Heartbreak rating: 14 Laura Ashley was almost everywhere back in the day with its vintage-style homeware and fashion Newscast/Universal Images Group / Via Getty Images There's something kinda comforting about the familiar Laura Ashley logo. It conjures up images of getting a scone and mooching around the shops after school with my mum....ahhh! Heartbreak rating: 15 Kookai was once a British high street regular and while it does still exist in other countries and online it doesn t have a brick-and-mortar UK presence anymore Stephane Cardinale/Corbis / Via Getty Images Kookai was where the cool kids shopped, and I remember staring longingly at a pair of platform shoes there back in the '00s, which my parents eventually caved and bought me — ahh the memories. Heartbreak rating: 16 I adored fashion retailer Internacionale and this was the very face I pulled when I remembered its existence Tap to play GIF Tap to play GIF NBC Can you tell my fashion obsession started young? Pre-teen me would beg to go into Internacionale. The fact that there wasn't a store local to where I grew up made it all the more appealing when I did find one! Heartbreak rating: 17 Fashion fans who else spent most of their Saturdays trying on stuff in Bay Trading Tap to play GIF Tap to play GIF Disney Channel My friends and I still talk about a pair of Bay Trading trainers adorned with a pink glittery flame that nearly threatened to ruin our 10-year friendship...SIGH. It was the place my besties and I looked for things to cram onto our birthday wish lists, and this Lizzie McGuire GIF pretty much sums up how cool we thought we were at the time. Heartbreak rating: 18 Were you even a pre-teen in the early 00s if you didn t beg your parents to take you to Morgan Sopa Images/SOPA Images/LightRocket / Via Getty Images Where do I even begin? A real blast from the past, Morgan was a shop my mum thought was "too grown-up" for me, but I was adamant it was the very height of sophistication. The lil' heart in the logo, the cool girl clothes...what's not to love? Heartbreak rating: 19 And finishing with the shop I miss the most we have Etam aka Tammy Girl ASOS The patchwork jeans, slogan crop tops, and diamanté adorned everything — the high street just isn't the same without our beloved Tammy Girl. In case you didn't know, you can still shop Tammy Girl on ASOS and live your best noughties life!
