Don t believe me Well here are 17 of the saddest animal fatalities in films CW: this post contains references to death and scenes that may cause distress. There are also hella spoilers, so feel free to scroll past the ones you don't want to read! 1 Bambi s mother — Bambi RKO Radio Pictures Of course Bambi's mother has to be on this list. For many young children, this would have been the first time they considered or came across the concept of loss, and it was frankly harrowing. Bambi's fear and then the words, "Your mother can't be with you anymore" is A LOT to take for anyone, let alone a child! If you can bear it here s that moment View this video on YouTube youtube.com 2 Marley — Marley & Me 20th Century Fox Any dog owner, dog lover, or person with tear ducts surely turned on the waterworks at this moment. When John's whispering to Marley and he says "We couldn't find a better dog" and starts to cry, it's a real sob-into-cushion moment. Also, I can't be the only one who saw Owen Wilson, Jennifer Anniston, and a cute dog on the DVD case and thought, what a nice lighthearted movie to sit down to. Here s an OPTIONAL clip from the film for ya View this video on YouTube youtube.com 3 Mufasa — The Lion King Buena Vista Pictures Yes, Mufasa's death is tragic — particularly due to his brother betraying him. However, what makes this death such a tear-jerker is little Simba's reaction. His confusion over what has happened followed by his guilt swallowing him up is just too much to take! Here s is Mufasa s death if you can hack it View this video on YouTube youtube.com 4 Artax — The NeverEnding Story Warner Bros. Pictures Goodness me, this was distressing. When Artax begins sinking into the Swamp of Sadness, I imagine many kids' hearts stopped. Then, when a panicked Atreyu attempts to rescue Artax to no avail, it's even harder to watch! You can really see he's losing his best friend. Again here s that scene but be warned it s immensely sad View this video on YouTube youtube.com 5 Tod s mother — The Fox and the Hound Buena Vista Distribution Perhaps the saddest part of this film is Tod getting left in the woods on his own, but to get to that point, you have to make it through one of the most traumatic opening credits of a film ever. Tod's mum's death was definitely one that caught me by surprise, and it pretty much sets the tone for what is a relatively distressing Disney movie TBH. Here are those opening credits not for the faint-hearted View this video on YouTube youtube.com 6 Samantha — I Am Legend Warner Bros. Pictures I've gotta say, this one might just take the biscuit for me. The fact that Robert is in a state of constant fear and is alone in a world surrounded by infected, half-dead humans makes this passing even harder. When he realises Sam is infected, and he knows he must kill his only companion and best friend, it's so devastating. He can't watch, and TBH, neither can I. You DON T have to watch this but here is that moment View this video on YouTube youtube.com 7 Arlo s father — The Good Dinosaur Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures I was totally not expecting this, and my WORD, was it horrible. Maybe the worst bit is his slight smile to his son to reassure him that it's all going to be okay right before he gets swept away by the flood. It's harrowing AF. I say harrowing maybe you ll find another way to describe this View this video on YouTube youtube.com 8 Charlotte — Charlotte s Web Paramount Pictures This film gave us multiple moments of sadness, but Charlotte's death was surely the most heartbreaking one. Her acceptance of what was coming, along with her attempt to teach Wilbur the nature of mortality, makes her final words even more powerful (if not somewhat existential): "What is a life anyway? We're born. We live a little, and then we die." Watch Charlotte s wise final words here View this video on YouTube youtube.com 9 Coral — Finding Nemo Buena Vista Pictures Distribution Another Disney movie, another tragic opening scene. I always blank this out of my memory of the film, but when Coral (Nemo's mum) sees the barracuda and looks straight to her kids with fear in her eyes, it's super crushing because you know exactly what's going to happen. The untimely end of Coral by evil barracuda View this video on YouTube youtube.com 10 Hedwig — Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 Warner Bros. Pictures Fans of the books will likely tell you that the movie version of this moment doesn't hit quite as hard as it does in print, but this scene still definitely deserves a place on this list. Hedwig had been with Harry all of his wizarding life, and she's such a constant throughout all of the books and films. Despite this, she gets taken away fairly early on in The Deathly Hallows, and it's just senseless! Poor Hedwig meets her demise protecting Harry View this video on YouTube youtube.com 11 Daisy — John Wick Lionsgate Look, I'm not gonna defend an assassin (he says as he starts to), but Daisy was John's last reminder of his late wife, so who can really blame him for going on a rampage? Not to mention, that beagle puppy was cute AF! The studio actually attempted to cut this scene thinking it wouldn't sit well with audiences (TRUE). However, the directors fought to keep the doggy-revenge plot in. If you must see it here s that scene View this video on YouTube youtube.com 12 Two Socks — Dances with Wolves Orion Pictures Two Socks was SUCH a hero, and this scene was a real tear-jerker. Dunbar and Two Socks had formed a unique bond — for it to end this way was devastating! I don t know what to tell you at this point Don t watch this View this video on YouTube youtube.com 13 Old Yeller — Old Yeller Buena Vista Distribution Goodness me, this was surely too much for a kid to take? When Travis is in denial about Old Yeller being infected with rabies, you totally feel for him. Then, the moment he takes that shotgun off Katie and has to shoot his dog is heartbreaking. They gave us a little lift with the puppy at the end, but was that enough? NO. Thankfully we couldn t find a clip for this one Tap to play GIF Tap to play GIF Buena Vista Distribution 14 Antie — Honey I Shrunk the Kids Buena Vista Pictures Distribution Antie was a bit of a legend, saving everyone from the scorpion and making sure they got to safety. It takes a lot to get the audience tearing up at the death of an ant, but when Antie was stung, it definitely had some viewers welling up. Here s how it all happened View this video on YouTube youtube.com 15 Skip — My Dog Skip Warner Bros. If you've watched this movie and you didn't get sad (or let's face it, cry) at the montage at the end, then you must be an actual statue. Skip was there for Willie when he was being bullied, and even helped him make friends. When he passes and the film shows a montage of their friendship, you're hit by such unbelievable nostalgia, the tears just flow without any effort or control! Here s that montage for ya if you need a good cry View this video on YouTube youtube.com 16 Mr Jingles — The Green Mile Warner Bros. I knoooow he gets brought back to life, but Mr. Jingles represented a tiny slither of benevolence and hope for John in a place full of fear and darkness. It was such a shocking moment when Percy squished him — I'm still not over it, honestly. This is a bit of a graphic one so tread carefully View this video on YouTube youtube.com 17 Kong — King Kong Universal Pictures Probably one of the most early and famous animal deaths in cinema is King Kong. I actually think the Peter Jackson version of this film does a great job of getting across the gentleness of Kong, which makes it all the more harrowing in the end. We see this magnificent yet sensitive creature who has been taken from his home getting shot down as he tries to protect Ann. It's not like we didn't see it coming, but it still hit hard! Here s the moment Kong couldn t hold on anymore View this video on YouTube youtube.com Did we miss anybody Let us know in the comments below Share This ArticleFacebook PinterestTwitterMailLink TV and MoviesGet all the best moments in pop culture & entertainment delivered to your inbox. This site is protected by reCAPTCHA and the Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Service apply.
