YOU Magazine Fashion Beauty Celebrity Health Life Relationships Horoscopes Food Interiors Travel Home Interiors Jonathan Adler’ s New York apartment A shrine to the bold and the beautiful By You Magazine - November 8, 2020 From the standout floors to the elaborate ceilings, every inch of interior designer Jonathan Adler’s New York apartment is a shrine to the bold and the beautiful. Jonathan (right) with husband Simon Doonan, who’s a writer and creative ambassador for Barneys department store. In the living room, the marble mantelpiece showcases a collection of vintage Italian glass figurines. The tuffet, sconces and sculptures are all by Jonathan. Image: Nicole England Jonathan Adler’s home is the epitome of maximalist glamour. The American potter, designer and decorator, who launched his now hugely successful brand in 1998, is renowned for his witty and glamorous designs, a trademark that shines through in every facet of his home. The couple’s rescue dog FoxyLady in the foyer, which is dominated by a golden console designed by Jonathan. The mirror is by Oliver Sanchez, the chandelier vintage and the rug is from Morocco; for similar, try olliella.com. Image: Nicole England Bold-patterned fabrics adorn each corner, along with statement lighting and slogan cushions on the sofas and chairs. But if you peer beyond the vibrant designs you will often spot the couple’s glamorous rescue dog FoxyLady, either draped across a Vladimir Kagan sofa clad in ivory bouclé, chasing miniature tennis balls across a chequerboard floor, or curled up on a mid-century modern chair. The kitchen was designed by bilotta.com. The cabinet handles were all carved out of clay by Jonathan in his studio and then cast in solid brass. Image: Nicole England Giant pink Perspex tusks frame the doorway to the Juliet balcony. The monochrome chequerboard rug was handwoven in Peru and compliments the curved olive green armchair. Image: Nicole England The place is brimming with character: colourful objects on the surfaces, curious eyes adorn the walls (and even poke out from a non-functioning fireplace) and lighting of all shapes and sizes illuminates the rooms. A Jonathan Adler dining table in the corner of the living room is used for additional display space. The acrylic car sculpture is a favourite from the classic Adler collection. The artwork on the wall is by Ed Paschke. Image: Nicole England Foxylady luxuriating on the Vladimir Kagan sofa. The coffee table is Jonathan Adler. Image: Nicole England Jonathan and Simon have lived in the apartment for 25 years, but its current look is the result of a renovation 18 months ago. Each room was repurposed, with the couple’s bedroom becoming Simon’s office and the old living room the bedroom. The bedroom is anchored by a four poster bed by mid-century designer Paul R Evans anddecorated with Jonathan Adler textiles. The Sputnik chandelier draws the eye upwards towards the ornate ceiling. Image: Nicole England Once things settled, they set about furnishing the space with newly designed cushions, lamps and furniture. The design goal was ‘bold and glamorous’. Simon wanted a home office with a swinging 60s vibe. Chocolate brown walls are punctuated with pops of colour and louche eccentricity. A gallery wall of portraits and statement pieces makes the most of every inch of space. Image: Nicole England For more information, go to uk.jonathanadler.com.
