Let me start by wishing you a very happy New Year. We have made it this far, despite all the horrors life keeps hurling at us, and that is certainly something to celebrate. I’m not a massive New Year’s resolution maker. I always feel they are just another stick to beat ourselves with when our busy lives stop us becoming the queen of pilates, a fluent Mandarin speaker or that daredevil rock climber. Come January, I’m more of a wistful list maker. Nothing clears the head like getting a long list down on paper– especially if you’re lying awake at 3am – and then slowly ticking things off, one by one. He titled it The Essentials and it runs like this… 1. A pair of dark denim jeans. 2. A sense of humour. 3. A daily read of an intelligent newspaper. 4. Good manners. 5. Nail clippers. 6. Tweezers. 7. A magnifying mirror. 8. A beautiful toothbrush. 9. A bottle of mouthwash. 10.A good cologne that becomes a signature. 11. A well-cut dark suit. 12. Classic black lace-up shoes. 13. Black loafers. 14. A blazer. 15. Lots of crisp white cotton shirts. 16. New socks and underwear. 17.A classic tuxedo. 18. A beautiful day watch with a metal band. 19. An evening watch with a leather band. 20. The perfect sunglasses. 21. Perfect teeth – and if you don’t have them, save up and have them fixed. Which got me thinking about my own 21 things every stylish woman must have? And here they are… 1. A pair of beautiful heels that you can actually walk in. 2. Tooth floss. 3. An excellent coffee maker. 4. A timeless camel coat. 5. An endless supply of chocolate. 6. Kindness. 7. A fabulous blazer. 8. Matching underwear and great knickers. 9. A black cashmere knit. 10.A piece of gold jewellery to wear everywhere, everyday. 11. Loyal girlfriends. 12. Manicured nails. 13. A blow dry. 14. Pets that don’t moult. 15. Natural-looking make-up. 16. Jeans that give a good bum. 17. Bath oil. 18. Leather trousers. 19. Knee-high boots. 20. A sexy musky perfume. 21.
