With many beauty salons re-opening in the coming months, the wait is nearly over to have access to professional beauty services, and if you’re desperate to book your first wax post-lockdown, one expert has some top tips in order to properly prep and stay safe. Getty Images Beauty booking app Treatwell spoke to Sofia, co-founder at Naked Hare Group and salon partner, to reveal the best ways to get ready for that first wax back after months of stepping away from the salon. If you’ve been shaving your body hair while in lockdown, all is not lost, says Sofia. ‘You won’t have “undone” all your time spent waxing,’ she says. However, chances are things may be slightly more uncomfortable than usual during your first wax. ‘Your first wax may feel a little more sensitive; when you frequently shave, it actually strengthens the hair and makes the skin more sensitive, instead of thinning and softening the hair like waxing does over time.’ Treatwell In order to prepare for your appointment, ensure the hair growth is between a quarter of an inch to one inch long, trimming it if necessary. If you’re not confident trimming it yourself (it can be trickier than you think), your therapist can do this for you before your wax. You should also give skin a good exfoliation prior to attending; ‘gently exfoliating with a body scrub or exfoliating mitt 24 hours before your wax makes it easier for the wax to stick to the hair instead of the skin, which makes it less painful,’ Sofia says. The most important thing to consider is safety. New rules and regulations for beauty destinations will intend to keep us as out of harm’s way as possible, with strict distancing and PPE requirements. Sofia explains that in her salon, ‘the hygiene standards will be that of a medical clinic.’ ‘Our therapists will be wearing full PPE and clients should too where possible,’ she adds. Getty Images If you’re feeling a bit nervous about heading back to the salon, you could always give your chosen destination a ring to double check all staff will be kitted out in safety gear, and ask what you can do to keep yourself and others safe before stepping through the door. After your wax, the advice remains the same as before: ‘avoid working out for 24 hours before and after your wax, and the same goes for sun exposure (or tanning beds) for 48 hours either side of your appointment’. Once it’s all done, apply a calming gel to soothe directly after your wax (Sofia recommends aloe vera) and wait a couple of days before exfoliating.
