Even those who usually couldn’t care less about football were totally absorbed into the Euro 2020 competition. After being starved of sport during the height of the pandemic, we were ready and raring to embrace the Euros, which was supposed to take place last year. What’s more, this marked the very first year England reached the finals of the competition. To say the nation was excited seems like a bit of an understatement. Getty Images It’s no surprise then to learn that the Euro 2020 final match between England and Italy has become the third most-watched TV event in UK history. In fact, it was the most-watched TV event for over 20 years. It’s been reported that on Sunday evening an average of 17.8 million people tuned in to BBC One to watch the Euros, which takes place every four years. An additional average of four million people watched the final match on ITV. Getty Images The BBC had a whopping 25 million people watch the game at its peak, during the live broadcast. The peak of ITV’s viewing figures reached 5.8 million. The combined figures total up to around 31.1 million, which means that the England V Italy game is now the third most-watched TV broadcast of all time, the Metro reports. We can’t help but wonder, what TV moments took the two top spots? Well, in second place is Princess Diana‘s funeral in 1997 which was watched by 32.1 million. Getty Images In first place, was England’s World Cup victory in 1966 that pulled in the most ever viewers. A staggering 32.3 million people tuned in to watch England’s one and only World Cup win. Getty Images Even if you were one of the few who didn’t watch the match, by now we all know how the Euro 2020 final ended. Football sadly didn’t come home, with England losing to Italy on a penalty shoot-out after a 1-1 score at full-time. Despite the loss, we’ve never been more proud of an England squad. Luckily, the 2022 World Cup is only a year away for us to cheer them all on again… RELATED ARTICLESMORE FROM AUTHOR Everything we know about The Crown season 5 Aldi s exercise equipment is on sale with up to 50% off The best Halloween events for 2022 across the UK Popular in Life The You magazine team reveal their New Year s resolutions December 31, 2021 Susannah Taylor The TLC tools your body will love January 23, 2022 How to stop living in fear February 6, 2022 Susannah Taylor My pick of the fittest leggings February 27, 2022 Women’ s Prize for Fiction 2022 winner announced June 17, 2022 These BBC dramas are returning for a second series June 30, 2022 Susannah Taylor gives the lowdown on nature s little helper – CBD April 17, 2022 The baby names that are banned across the world April 27, 2022 The Queen has released her own emojis May 26, 2022 Sally Brompton horoscopes 27th June-3rd July 2022 June 26, 2022 Popular CategoriesFood2704Life2496Fashion2240Beauty1738Celebrity1261Interiors684 Sign up for YOUMail Thanks for subscribing Please check your email to confirm (If you don't see the email, check the spam box) Fashion Beauty Celebrity Life Food Privacy & Cookies T&C Copyright 2022 - YOU Magazine.
