How about a Michael or Maxine? Well, according to new figures released around the most popular baby names of 2019, if you don’t know one already, it’s probably only a matter of time before one is born into the family. BabyCentre has revealed its list of the most popular baby names 2019, and there’s a surge of 80s names rising back up through the ranks. Getty Images While the top spots for both boys and girls are taken by traditional names such as Olivia and Muhammed, the number of new mums and dad making retro choices, including Jason, John, Penny and Hannah, is said to be growing. Lorna Marsh, senior editor at BabyCentre, said that nostalgia for the security felt during those decades could be the driving force behind the trend. Getty Images ‘We are seeing a real rise in strong and stable names, especially those with a 1980s twist,’ she explained. ‘Whatever anyone’s thoughts on that decade’s politics, they were at least more settled. Perhaps this is why parents of baby Michaels and Maxines are compensating for the current turmoil with solid 80s choices.’ Elsewhere, inspiration is being drawn from TV shows like Game of Thrones, with names like Arya, Tyrion and Theon all seeing an increase in registrations, and the royal family – after the birth of Prince Harry and Meghan’s son in May, Archie is the 18th most popular baby name in the country, and George and Charlotte are both in the top 20.
