YOU Magazine Fashion Beauty Celebrity Health Life Relationships Horoscopes Food Interiors Travel Home Beauty BEAUTY KNOWHOW Lessons from Charlotte Tilbury’ s mum and make-up muse Patsy By You Magazine - June 23, 2019 Last week Charlotte Tilbury, make-up artist extraordinaire and founder of her eponymous make-up brand, launched her Hot Lips project take two – a collection of 11 suits-all lipsticks with a charitable slant: a guaranteed £1 million from proceeds will go to Women for Women International. Charlotte is a global ambassador of this charity that helps women survivors of conflict to rebuild their lives. Charlotte Tilbury’s Hot Lips 2 Lipsticks in Patsy Red (after her mum), Angel Alessandra (in tribute to supermodel Ambrosio) and JK Magic (in honour of Ms Rowling), all available at charlottetilbury.com With Hot Lips 2, shades are again inspired by and named after her celebrity friends and clients – this collection includes Kylie Minogue, Amal Clooney and Susan Sarandon. And, for the first time, the lipsticks (£28) will be refillable (£19) with a choice of five cases. With one of the colours inspired by Charlotte’s mother Patsy, we thought we would take the opportunity to ask the 72-year-old mama of this modern-day cosmetics mogul a few beauty questions of her own… What have you taught Charlotte about make-up The importance of looking after her complexion and moisturising her lovely skin every day. We lived in Ibiza and I always reminded her that the sun was beauty suicide and to never go out in it between noon and 4.30pm. The sun is very ageing, especially on the décolletage, so always protect to perfect. Charlotte was a natural with make-up – from a very young age she was so inquisitive about it. She often picked up magazines, inspected them and asked how the women looked so good – she would study those images for hours. You seem to love a bold lip – has that always been your look I’ve got good lips and believe that old saying: ‘If you’ve got it, flaunt it.’ For me a red lip is instant glamour. When I was growing up, Brigitte Bardot was my beauty icon: with her fabulous blonde hair and gingham frocks, those seductive smoky black eyes and that standout pretty pink lip. It was total glamour and I wanted to re-create it. Now I only wear red or orangey red – they suit my colouring. I always say, ‘Wake up and wear lipstick – wherever you are’. If you’ve got a nice kimono on, as well as your shades and favourite lipstick, you can go anywhere. Have you changed your make-up as you ve got older I don’t do age. I don’t even think about it when it comes to make-up, I just prefer to be more subtle. I would describe my look now as elegant with an edge. I never use black on my eyes – instead I go for soft brown powder pencils, such as Charlotte’s beautiful Rock ’n’ Kohl in Barbarella Brown (£19). I find it lifts and elongates my eyes for a more youthful look. When it comes to lipstick, Charlotte taught me that the best way to make lips look fuller is by adding a little Lip Cheat Lip Liner (£16) to the areas that need more definition and plumping. Need a refill More lippies with wow – and less waste Guerlain Rouge G De Guerlain (lipstick, £26, and case, £18, selfridges.com). This satin-finish lipstick is one of the most elegantly housed and its changeable case includes a flip-up mirror and comes in a variety of colours. Hourglass Confession Ultra Slim Refillable Lipstick (£31, and refill, £20, spacenk.com) is more of a gloss in a stick, giving a light shimmery dose of colour. It’s housed in a chic pen-like case.
