YOU Magazine Fashion Beauty Celebrity Health Life Relationships Horoscopes Food Interiors Travel Home Food The Queen has a very specific demand when it comes to ice cubes in her drinks By You Magazine - November 27, 2019 While the subject of what the Queen eats in a day has always been a subject of interest (well, who wouldn’t want a peek inside the Buckingham Palace dining room), we’re equally curious about her drinks cabinet too. Stories about Her Majesty’s beverages of choice vary wildly, but according to a new report, there’s one standard she always maintains, no matter what she’s drinking: a certain shape of ice cube in her glass. Getty Images Karen Dolby, author of the book Queen Elizabeth II’s Guide to Life, explained to Fabulous: ‘The Queen likes her ice cubes in her glass to be round so they don’t chink quite as much as square ones.’ In fact, in the past it’s even been said that Prince Philip once invented a machine that makes tiny ice balls rather than conventional cubes in order to please his wife, although this has never been confirmed officially. Getty images Top of the Queen’s list of favourite tipples is apparently a gin and Dubonnet, a type of a fortified red wine, served over ice with a slice of lemon – although former royal chef Darren McGrady has put paid to rumours that she drinks four of the cocktails every day. ‘She’d be pickled if she drank that much,’ he joked. However, while on a visit to the National Institute of Agricultural Botany earlier this year, the Queen surprised everyone by admitting that she doesn’t actually drink other varieties of wine. Getty Images According to PEOPLE magazine, NIAB’s chief executive Tina Barsby revealed after their meeting that the family have ‘some vines in Windsor,’ but Elizabeth told her: ‘I don’t actually drink wine myself, but I hear it’s very good.’ When it comes to soft drinks, Liz is reportedly all about Early Grey or Assam teas – so if you’ve got no round ice cubes to hand when she pays you a visit, you can always pop the kettle on instead.
