You can expect to hear from: documentary maker Louis Theroux, boxing champion Nicola Adams, radio presenter Adele Roberts, and mental health ambassador and TV personality Dr. Alex George. Here s some of the best advice from these total inspirations… 1 Turn on your senses to stay present Richard Tilney-bassett Being fully in the moment isn’t easy, but it can be a powerful tool for our mental health — something Adele Roberts tries to adopt every day. Turning your attention to your senses and surroundings can help to quieten a busy mind, centre yourself in the moment, and ease any niggling worries or anxiety. 2 Treat every setback as an opportunity to learn Richard Tilney-bassett Gold medallist Nicola Adams passes on the wisdom of her long time coach and mentor, which is to learn from every experience or setback. Nicola knows that by turning negative outcomes (for her, losing a fight) into positives (an opportunity to see where she can improve), we can continue to learn and grow. The trick is becoming aware of our negative thoughts so we can quickly overrule them before they bring us down. 3 Connect with loved ones — ideally with a bit of laughter Richard Tilney-bassett Journalist and comedian Louis Theroux (who doesn’t love this guy) feels that everything comes down to connection. He chats about the importance of being better connected to our family and friends, as well as everyone around us. By being fully present, sharing what makes us vulnerable, reaching out for support, and throwing in some humour, our overall well-being thrives. 4 Switch late-night screentime for morning exercise You ll sleep so much better Richard Tilney-bassett Lack of sleep is hugely connected to mental health, Dr. Alex explains, with late-night screentime wreaking havoc on quality of sleep. Turning off our devices an hour or so before bed is a habit we can all benefit from (although it definitely requires discipline), along with getting up and out for some morning movement. Early exposure to daylight helps set our circadian rhythms (our sleep-wake pattern over the course of a 24-hour day) and heart-pumping exercise will help us feel good and sleep better, too. 5 Set mini goals throughout the day and tick them off as you go Richard Tilney-bassett One of Adele’s tips is breaking the day up into chunks and setting small, achievable goals to focus on. Make a to-do list and celebrate each little win (enjoy that big tick!) to see how it can lift your mood. Focusing on just the next few hours, rather than the days ahead, can be amazing for alleviating anxiety. 6 Keep perspective and appreciate what s important Richard Tilney-bassett Louis’s advice is to keep perspective, which helps us see what’s most important in life. Being able to step back when we’re anxious and put the brakes on is a great skill to develop but one that requires practice. Reaching out to other people, talking about our problems, or simply having a change of scenery can all help massively in gaining that distance and perspective we need. 7 Learn to manage worry Richard Tilney-bassett Dr. Alex’s top tip is learning how to manage our worries, most of which never come to anything. Biologically, our brains are wired to find things to fixate on. And if we can manage how we focus our thoughts — through practising mindfulness, perspective, and gratitude — we can direct these in a helpful way. Remembering that we are all human, that there’s always hope, and that ultimately, we’ll come out the other side of a dark and difficult time are all central to this. 8 Be your own cheerleader Come on you can do it Richard Tilney-bassett Being kind to ourselves is a big one — and mentioned by every guest. In fact, Adele credits self-kindness for creating the “biggest shift” in her mindset over the past year or so. Whether it’s taking time for self-care, accepting mistakes, or simply talking to ourselves in a more encouraging, compassionate way, having a supportive inner voice can be a game changer for our mental health. 9 Adopt the traffic light system in daily life Richard Tilney-bassett Dr. Alex is passionate about removing stigmas in mental health and getting people to talk about how they feel. His “traffic light system” (whereby you share with others how you’ve felt throughout the day using the colours green, amber, or red) is an excellent way of opening up conversations about our emotions and how we’re coping day to day with things we’re going through. 10 Turn your attention to helping others Richard Tilney-bassett Both Adele and Dr. Alex — and, of course, Joe himself — have found fulfilment and self-worth in “giving back” to others, having overcome adversity in their own lives. By turning our focus outwards in a way that’s purposeful and rewarding, our mental well-being can reap its own benefits. Explore ways you can help people around you who are dealing with similar challenges.
