My work friend recommended this one to me and I was hooked instantly! This seven-hour-long podcast takes you through the DC sniper attacks of October 2002, from the turbulent investigation to the killers' capture. The story is told first-hand by FBI agent brothers, Jim Clemente (former FBI behavioral profiler) and Tim Clemente (former FBI counterterrorism expert), who share the details of the behavioral, forensic, and electronic analysis vital to cracking the case, along with truly harrowing accounts from victims and family members of those deceased. The podcast even included accounts from those who knew the perpetrators best. The result? A real inside look into the DC sniper investigation and the devastating events and impact of such terrifying crimes. 2 Mindhunter View this track on Spotify DVR Podcast Network / Via open.spotify.com One for both TV show and podcast lovers...the Mindhunter podcast acts as a companion listen for Netflix's Mindhunter TV series which ran from 2017–2019. The show was inspired by the founding of the Behavioral Science Unit in the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the late 1970s and the beginning of criminal profiling, and the podcast is an episode-by-episode synopsis and analysis of the Netflix show. I love it because it's a podcast with a bit of intelligence, plus it gives us all the more reason to swoon over Fincher's fantastic series. 3 Tom Brown s Body View this video on YouTube Texas Monthly / Via youtube.com In 2016, in the small town of Canadian, Texas, a popular high school senior disappeared the night before Thanksgiving. Two years later, his remains were found. This eight-part podcast digs into the mystery as everyone in town becomes a suspect, including Tom's family, friends, the local sheriff, and an investigator. 4 The Serial Killer Dive into the serial killer phenomenon with this podcast led by Thomas Wiborg-Thune as he talks us through stories of serial killers from who they were to what they did and how they did it. What's really interesting in this show is the effort into exploring the killer's youth background and how it doesn't shy away from the graphic details. You'll find yourself immersed in the stories of the world, too, from the Icelandic Axe murderer to South African serial killers. 5 Suspect View this track on Spotify Wondery / Via open.spotify.com An apartment complex hosts a themed room Halloween party that ended with the murder of one of the hosts. Writers and podcast hosts, Matthew Shaer and Eric Benson, try to uncover what happened at the party and why the police homed in on one suspect in particular. Did the guy in the devil mask or bank robber outfit do it? A decade later, Shaer and Benson return to the scene of the crime to uncover what happened, speaking with the partygoers and telling the story of mislaid justice, race, and policing. 6 Columbine David Cooper / Toronto Star / Via Getty Images Columbine was one of the hardest true crime stories I've listened to, and at a heavy 14 hours long! That said, it was a tragic but really investing listen. Journalist Dave Cullen revisits the notorious killing spree of Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold and the 1999 Columbine High School massacre with the idea of trying to explain how the two boys ended up on the wrong path and why they acted with such disgusting violence. Cullen demonstrates the difficulty in understanding or untangling a shooting spree, how mass tragedies are catapulted into the news and sometimes made worse by media misinformation, and pulls in lots of stories from those who knew the perpetrators beforehand, or those who had been impacted after the events. The audiobook is way more layered and even more tragic to listen to than you could imagine, especially when we learn of the conclusion behind the 'whys.' 7 The Shrink Next Door View this video on YouTube Bloomberg / Via youtube.com Based on the real-life events of Marty Markowitz and Dr. Isaac (Ike) Herschkopf, the podcast delves into the 30-year relationship between Marty and his therapist, Ike, who used his power to slowly take over his patient's life and finances. From being advised to cut off his sister, to creating a private foundation, and adding his therapist as the co-owner of his $2.5M bank account, this is a wild story of the gaslighting and manipulation of a vulnerable, anxious-ridden man named Marty. 8 Dateline View this track on Spotify NBC News / Via open.spotify.com If you haven't heard of Dateline then where have you been? The prime-time television show has been around since the '90s, and now there's a podcast with a whole host of episodes dedicated to true-crime mysteries, documentaries, and in-depth investigations that span a number of topics. From episodes on the murder in the House of Gucci to a missing 13-year-old girl who tells her friends she was meeting someone at the local Dairy Queen, all the way to a Valentine's day murder... there are too many grisly stories to count! 9 In Cold Blood Dove / Via Getty Images The Clutter Family Murders of November 1959 in Holcomb, Kansas, are reconstructed and retold in Truman Capote's book, read by Scott Brick for the audiobook version. The murders saw four members of the Clutter family savagely killed with a shotgun, where there was no apparent motive and almost no clues. The audiobook is a really interesting listen as it recounts the events from multiple points of view, from the policy to the community and judicial system. 10 LISK Long Island Serial Killer Mopac Audio / Via liskpodcast.com The Long Island Serial Killer is a story heard by many over the years, and this podcast is inspired by the Lost Girls: An Unsolved American Mystery book. The series reflects on the LISK investigation which began in 2010 after the disappearance of sex worker Shannan Gilbert, followed by the discovery of nine more murders of sex workers whose bodies were disposed of in similar ways. The series features unheard interviews with family members, police officers, and government officials, as well as friends and others affected by the murders. It's an incredibly detailed listen which goes deep into the victim's stories. 11 Serial View this track on Spotify Serial Productions / Via open.spotify.com Serial is another addictive true crime podcast with an investigative journalism angle. It's hosted by Sarah Koenig and each series focuses on a different event. Season 1 is by far the most engaging as it looks into the story of the 1999 killing of Hae Min Lee, an 18-year-old student in Baltimore, with many believing that the murderer was the since-convicted, Adnan Syed, Lee's ex-boyfriend. What makes Serial even more interesting is that they recently brought out another episode that focuses again on Adnan after a huge development in his conviction after years of imprisonment. 12 Bible John Creation of a Serial Killer BBC Sounds / Via bbc.co.uk New to the podcast scene is Bible John: Creation of a Serial Killer, and with just three out of 10 episodes released, it's already set to be a good one! The show delves into the Bible John murders, an investigation which became one of Scotland's biggest ever manhunts. The unsolved case began in 1968 when a young woman was murdered after a night of dancing in Glasgow's Barrowland Ballroom, the first victim in a series of three killings. 13 I ll Be Gone In The Dark Michael Loccisano / Via Getty Images There have been many accounts of the Golden State Killer, but none as atmospheric and obsessive as Michelle McNamara's audiobook, a journalist who tragically died while investigating the case. For over 10 years, an elusive rapist turned murderer committed 50 sexual assaults and 10 sadistic murders in Northern California, before disappearing and eluding capture by multiple police forces. Thirty years later, McNamara delves into the case, reviewing police reports, interviewing victims, and embedding herself into the online communities surrounding the case, all in the pursuit of truth. 14 Kim Kardashian s The System The Case of Kevin Keith View this track on Spotify Spotify Original / Via open.spotify.com We're just two episodes down into Kim Kardashian's surprising new podcast, The System, and I can't say I'm not invested and interested. The first season focuses on the case of Kevin Keith, a man who has been working to prove his innocence after being charged with three murders in 1994. What's even more interesting about this podcast is the controversy that's come along with it thanks to the surviving victims coming out and saying that Kim Kardashian never even called them. Safe to say it's going to be really interesting to see this one unfold... 15 My Favourite Murder View this track on Spotify Exactly Right / Via open.spotify.com "Stay sexy and don't get murdered''...it's true crime with a dabble of comedy hosted by Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark. The two each select a single murder, survivor story, or true crime story to recount and discuss, and the format is usually one host telling the story whilst the other reacts and provides commentary. The witty podcast quickly became a fan favorite for the true crime listeners, but it has recently faced some backlash over the hosts' comments on the death of Queen Elizabeth II (you can see this in the number of negative reviews and comments under the podcast lately). 16 Finding Tamika View this video on YouTube Audible Original / Via youtube.com A neo-noir true crime drama from executive producer Kevin Hart that focuses on the search for Tamika Huston, a 24-year-old black woman from Spartanburg who went missing in 2004. According to Audible's description, Tamika's case became "a rallying cry for other missing Black women in America and led to a growing demand to expose a system that ignores missing girls and women of colour". The story is a shocking listen and heartbreaking too, but you'll have to get over the feeling that they have gone slightly overboard with the production elements as opposed to some of the cleaner true crime listens. 17 True Crime Obsessed View this track on Spotify Obsessed Network / Via open.spotify.com Another lighthearted one to add to the list (if you can ever call crime "light-hearted"), join Patrick Hinds and Gillian Pensavalle as they recap your favorite true crime documentaries. You'll get the lowdown on those shocking and infamous Netflix shows such as Abducted in Plain Sight, Dirty John, and The Ted Bundy Tapes. Be warned, there's a lot of laughing! 18 Helter Skelter W. W. Norton & Company / Via youtube.com Vincent Bugliosi was the prosecuting attorney in the Manson trial, so this book is a unique insider look into the baffling and cold-blooded Tate-LaBianca murders carried out by Charles Manson and four of his followers in 1969. At nearly 27 hours long, the audiobook version is as gripping as it could get, going through the forensic details, and witness reports to the arrest and trial of the killers without losing your attention. 19 Crime Junkie View this track on Spotify Audiochuck / Via open.spotify.com Crime Junkie is a true crime podcast dedicated to giving, well, you guessed it, crime junkie's a fix. Hosted primarily by Ashley Flowers along with Brit Prawat, the two crime story lovers share with you what crimes they have been obsessing over.
