Ice cream is also an absolute must and you can’t go too far wrong with a pint of Ben & Jerry’s, however the icy treat has always belonged in the sweet-only camp – until now. Alamy Ben & Jerry’s has released a brand new flavour and it’s perfect for those who can never decide between sweet and savoury. Dubbed Chip Happens, the new flavour is described as ‘a cold mess of chocolate ice cream with fudge chips & crunchy potato chip swirls’. Yes, you did read that right: this ice cream contains potato chips, aka crisps to us Brits. Instagram/@thegrocerofficial It may sound unusual, but before you go disregarding it completely, those salty crispy swirls are actually incredible at providing that sweet/salty balance – it’s no different to the concept behind salted caramel or ordering a mixture of sweet and salty popcorn at the cinema. The ice cream has been created in collaboration with Netflix and American baking show Nailed It! (total baking novices attempt to recreate cake masterpieces – check it out, it’s hilarious). The Ben & Jerry’s website describes the flavour as so: ‘Sometimes “chip” happens and everything’s a mess, but we Nailed It! with this chip-filled limited batch. When smooth chocolate ice cream meets fudge chips & salty swirls, they pack a serious one-two crunch. The best part? There won’t be anything left to clean up.’ Ben & Jerry’s The new ice cream flavour is due to launch in Asda later this month for £4.50 a tub, but it’s limited edition, so you’ll need to be quick if you want to try it. While it’s yet to launch in the UK, Chip Happens has been available in the US for a few months now and has received positive reviews – overall. One person described it as: ‘For all the people who dip their fries in a frosty. Absolutely delicious. Sweet, salty, creamy and crunchy. This is a pint of oxymorons and I love it.’ Alamy However, not everyone is as taken with the flavour: ‘Ew, not good at all. The chip swirl is like chewing sand and it disrupts the rest of ice cream. This was not pleasant. Icky stuff. Wish I’d never tried it.’ It has however received 4.5 stars overall, so we’re just going to have to make up our own minds and try it for ourselves. The Chip Happens flavour comes as part of a collaboration between Ben & Jerry’s and Netflix, and a ‘Netflix & Chilll’d’ ice cream flavour is already available at Asda. It too follows the sweet ‘n’ salty trend by containing peanut butter ice cream with sweet and salty pretzel swirls and brownie pieces.
