Whether it’s their wardrobe protocols or festive celebrations, the monarchy have their own unique way of living – and it turns out that applies to the way they sleep too. It has been widely reported over the years that the Queen and her husband Prince Phillip not only sleep in separate beds but have entirely different bedrooms, as opposed to sharing one like most married couples. Getty Images In a recently resurfaced interview, Phillip’s cousin Lady Pamela Hicks, detailed the reasoning behind the decision. According to Hicks, it is simply the norm for the upper class, who ‘always have separate bedrooms.’ As reported by The Sun, Hicks made the claim back in 2012 while speaking to royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith for her book about the monarchy. ‘In England, the upper class always have had separate bedrooms,’ Hicks explained. ‘You don’t want to be bothered with snoring or someone flinging a leg around.’ She continued: ‘Then when you are feeling cosy you share your room sometimes. It is lovely to be able to choose.’ When put like that, it certainly does sound like a luxury. Plus, they have a point about the disruption. Getty Images It was previously reported by The Independent that a 2016 study from Paracelsus Medical University in Nuremberg, Germany proved that sleeping apart could be the secret to a longer lasting marriage – which by the looks of things seemed to have worked for the Queen and Prince Phillip. The study highlighted that sleep issues and relationship problems tend to occur simultaneously, meaning couples who sleep in the same bedroom are more likely to experience nocturnal disturbances from their partner such as snoring, tossing and turning and bad hygiene for example – all of which can lead to arguments and sometimes even sexual dysfunction within the marriage. So if anything, perhaps we should be taking notes from the royals?
