YOU Magazine Fashion Beauty Celebrity Health Life Relationships Horoscopes Food Interiors Travel Home Food The correct order to put jam and cream on your scones has been confirmed By You Magazine - August 30, 2019 Scones are a quintessential part of British culture, but we’ve never quite been able to agree on the best way to prepare them. It’s not the best recipe for the crumbly baked goods themselves that divides us as a nation – it’s whether to put jam or cream onto them first when we serve them. Some use cream as their initial layer, arguing that its essentially the butter on a sweet sandwich, while others dollop jam directly on to the scone and add cream second – a difference that’s said to be regional. Getty Images Cream first is a Devonshire tradition, while a Cornish cream tea is jam first, but ultimately, it comes down to a personal preference that you’re not likely to be swayed away from. Even the bakers at iconic tea rooms like Betty’s say there’s no hard and fast rule, telling Metro that ‘afternoon tea is a delicious treat and you should enjoy it whatever way you want.’ But not satisfied with the debate raging on (and on, and on…), the team at Village Hotel Club decided to conduct a survey to find out what the country really thinks, and the outcome might shock you. Getty Images 52 per cent of the 2,000 people quizzed about the way they build their perfect scone voted to add the jam first. Meanwhile, a mere 25 per cent said that cream should the first spread, while an indifferent 19 per cent said that they don’t care either way. So, with more than half of the country firmly standing by a jam-first philosophy, it would seem that the ‘official’ decision has been made – whether you agree or not. Getty Images And of that wasn’t enough to either validate or infuriate your feelings on afternoon tea, you might also be interested to know that Village Hotels asked its respondents how to pronounce the word too. 56 per cent declared that ‘scone’ rhymed with ‘gone’, while 44 per cent rhymed it with ‘stone’.
