YOU Magazine Fashion Beauty Celebrity Health Life Relationships Horoscopes Food Interiors Travel Home Life The cheapest supermarket in the UK has been revealed By Kanika Banwait - October 7, 2022 When it comes to discount retailers, are you team Lidl or team Aldi? Either way, both supermarkets are renowned for their excellent bargains and value for money. That said, it was actually Aldi that was crowned the cheapest UK supermarket in September, according to the monthly analysis by Which?. Alamy Stock Photo We love to see what’s on offer in the ‘middle of Lidl’ and you’re lucky if you manage to basket an Aldi Specialbuy before it sells out, but how do the brands compare on essentials? Every day throughout September, Which? checked the prices of 48 popular groceries in various supermarkets to figure out which one was the cheapest. The essential products included foods like Heinz baked beans, milk and tea bags. Aldi beat Lidl to the top spot by £8466, proving both stores are neck and neck when it comes to cheap prices. The shop at Aldi came to £75.61, while the same products at Lidl cost £77.45. Asda was the cheapest of the ‘big four’ supermarkets, with the trolley contents priced at £84.87. Which? It’s no surprise to see Waitrose at the other end of the scale, where the products were almost £24 more than at Aldi, costing a total of £99.40. A further investigation by Which? looked into the total cost of 149 items. The bigger selection included more branded items like Cathedral City cheddar cheese and Andrex toilet paper. Aldi and Lidl weren’t included in the research as they have a smaller selection of products. Which? So Asda took the top spot this time, coming in at £343.38. In fact, Asda has been the cheapest mainstream supermarket for 33 months now, having claimed the title every month since January 2020. Sainsbury’s took the second spot at £353.15. In third place was Tesco with its trolley items costing £368.26 – notably £15 more than Sainsbury’s. Morrisons and Ocado followed, with around £23 between them. Waitrose was the most expensive, at £384.51. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Which?
