But an annual survey conducted by Halifax has now revealed the actual best places to reside in within the UK in terms of beautiful scenery, affordable housing and a high quality of life. Getty Images This year, the Scottish island of Orkney topped the list beating various cities and towns across the country to the title. The rural destination, which came in at second place last year topped the list after Halifax analysed and weighed up a criteria including work, housing, education, health and community across cities nationwide and concluded that Orkney had the best to offer in all of the departments. Orkney was identified as ranking the highest for employment, good schools, low crime and an affordable average house price of £173,349. The latter is incredibly impressive considering it is 5.2 times the average income, which is also well below the national median of 7.3. Getty Images This year’s runner up was Richmondshire in Yorkshire, which was praised for having high personal wellbeing scores, low crime rates and little traffic. In fact, most of the cities on the list are in the North, including three of the top five. According to Halifax, the parts of the south featured on the list such as South Oxfordshire and the Cotswolds – where the Duke and Duchess of Sussex live – scored well on things such as wages and employment, life expectancy, heath and weather. Meanwhile the North received points for being more affordable and less crowded. The top 10 places to live in the UK 1. Orkney, Scotland 2. Richmondshire, Yorkshire and the Humber 3.
