But how much time are we actually talking? Getty Images There are plenty of theories out there based on that exact question. Most people believe that the amount of time we spend heartbroken has a direct correlation to the amount of time we spent in the relationship – some say it takes double the length of the relationship to really get over someone, while others, like Charlotte from Sex and The City, insist that it takes half as long as a relationship lasted to truly move on after a break-up. Then there are those who are adamant that you have to meet someone new before you can be over an ex completely. So, which one is it? While it is clear that there isn’t a one-rule-works-for-all system when it comes to break-ups, a new study has discovered that we all spend an average of 18 months of our lives getting over separation from various partners. This number was based on most people having three major break-ups and the six months, on average, it takes to recover from each of them. Getty Images According to the recent survey, which was carried out by OnePoll, the reason we all endure the pain of a heartbreak for such a long time is because a break-up can shake up our world. They throw our lives out of sync as we have to readjust to being single as opposed to part of a couple and this could mean changing our living situation, friendship groups and getting used to doing this alone. This is why it is important to give yourself the space and time you need to firstly process the break up and then go through the ups and downs that come with it.
