YOU Magazine Fashion Beauty Celebrity Health Life Relationships Horoscopes Food Interiors Travel Home Life The Vicar of Dibley’ s house is for sale for the first time in 60 years By Anya Meyerowitz - September 29, 2022 The idea of living in a quirky cottage in the countryside, with low-beamed ceilings and a cosy fireplace, is a dream that most Brits have likely fantasised about at various points (particularly when the punishing pace of urban life gets too much). And there’s one humble abode that has featured in our fantasies several times: the idyllic cottage that featured in the The Vicar of Dibley. Set in the tiny Buckinghamshire village of Turville (which has also featured in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Goodnight Mr Tom, Midsomer Murders and Killing Eve), Church Cottage was adjoined to the fictional home of Dawn French’s character, Geraldine Granger, in the popular sitcom show, and now, for the first in over 60 years, the two-bedroomed home is for sale. That’s right, for £900,000 (gulp), the rural dream could be yours. Accessed from the front via the grounds of St Mary the Virgin Church, the cottage’s bedrooms are joined by one bathroom, a living room which features a dual aspect and open fireplace, and modest kitchen. Admittedly, the home is in need of some renovation, as is the rear garden, which currently features a timber shed and greenhouse. The Savills website, the estate agents selling the property, describe the surrounding area as ‘consist[ing] of many beautiful cottages that date from the 16th century and is surrounded by rural farmland and beech woods, with footpaths and bridleways offering beautiful countryside for walking and riding.’ ‘Church Cottage is a beautiful Grade II Listed character cottage, located centrally in the sought-after Chiltern village of Turville, set back from the village green, with the church and the village pub sat at opposite ends,’ it adds. The current owners of Church Cottage say: ‘It has been very exciting to own a property that has appeared in such a popular sitcom and its connection with the Vicar of Dibley has often proved an interesting talking point among friends and family. It was lovely to see the house on screen and I hope the new owners will be very happy here.’ You can have a further snoop below or, if you fancy making an offer and living out your chocolate-box village dream, you can get more details via the Savills’ website here.
