This is called a ‘tunnelled’ candle, and not only can it be unsightly to look at, it’s also a big, expensive waste of wax – particularly if you’ve opted for a pricier brand. Getty Images You may have heard that the best way to prevent this from happening is to make sure you’re burning the candle correctly (ie. for long enough) from the get go. In other words, when you first light your new candle, make sure you burn it long enough that the full diameter of the wax begins to melt and lower, rather than just the middle bits. Depending on how big your candle is, a couple of hours usually suffices (larger, three wick styles will take longer). Getty Images However, nobody’s perfect and chances are, you’ve dropped the ball with a few of the candles in your stash, leading to a dreaded tunnel here and there. The good news is hope is not lost; a newly-resurfaced hack, shared by beauty journalist Lucy Partington on Instagram, has proven you can restore your candle to its former glory with just a little tin foil. All you have to do is fold a piece of aluminium foil into half, and wrap it around the candle, with the tops folding over the edges, but away from the centre where it will be burning. You then need to let the candle burn for around 30 minutes, before blowing it out and removing the foil. You should be left with an even candle, which looks as good as new. Just be careful when removing the foil as it’ll be hot, as will the container. And for candles that have no container, it’s even easier; rather than putting foil all around the candle, you simply push in the top bits of wax around the edges once you’ve had the candle burning for a while and the wax has warmed up. This will ensure the flame burns through the edges and not just the middle. The second part of this video shows how easy this method is. But remember to be super careful and wait a sufficient amount of time so you don’t burn yourself!
