For some, it is all about feasting on the leftovers and spending quality time with family members whilst watching whatever Disney classic is playing on BBC One. But while that is all well and good, for others it comes second to securing a haul of discounted buys from the famous Boxing Day retail sales. Alamy Stock Photo With Christmas over, retailers host a huge annual sale to shift some of their goods, and it’s become a staple part of the season. However, the shopping madness does come at the expense of those who have to spend the festive days away from their loved ones to keep the stores up and running. It’s for this reason that a petition calling for all shops to be closed on Boxing Day has gone viral. Over 68,000 people have already signed the petition, which was created by Metro last year but has since been revived, and argues that families should ‘be allowed to spend Christmas together, not working.’ ‘Would there be a difference at all if the sales, which will also be online, started on December 27 instead of the 26?’ it asks, adding that brands such as Home Bargains had already taken the step to push back their opening times and give staff Boxing Day off. Alamy Stock Photo ‘Let everyone spend the Christmas break with their families, why should retail workers be any different to office workers?’ said one commenter sharing their reason for signing the petition for 2019, while another said: ‘I worked in retail for 20 years and it’s totally unfair on ALL retail staff. Why does it matter if the shops are closed for 2 days?!’ However, this isn’t the first time a petition like of this nature has been made. Back in 2016, 235,678 people signed a similar one which was put before the Commons Select Committee. However, no changes were made. Perhaps they’ll be second time lucky?
