Perhaps not, but that’s about to change, because one particular pair from Uniqlo has taken the internet by storm, with shoppers viewing its dedicated hashtag almost one million times on TikTok. Winter is on the way, and while we’re keeping a few floral summer dresses to hand just in case, really what we need now are comfortable, cosy and durable pieces to carry us through the colder climes. Enter: the Uniqlo Pleated Wide-Leg Trousers, the second iteration of a design that immediately shot to internet stardom on release. The style first began doing the rounds when the Japanese label joined forces with cult pared-back label Marni earlier this year. Not only did the collaboration sell out both online and in-store, but the chino-style trousers began to pop up all over social media as sartorially-savvy shoppers were keen to share their stylish discovery. It turns out, we are not a country of fashion lovers who simply sit back and accept it when we are told that something is out of stock. Oh no. In fact, once the original pair had sold out, eagle-eyed fans scoped out the next-best thing, which turned out to be Uniqlo’s own-brand pleated wide-leg trousers, the hashtag of which has been viewed more than 932,200 times on TikTok alone. @mathildaaaa06 Best $49.90 spent #uniqlo #tiktoksg #fitcheck original sound – ?????_ – ?????_ And it’s not hard to see why the trews – which are available in black, navy and creamy caramel-toned colour ways – are such a hit. They’re roomy with an inconspicuous elastic waistband (no waist-pinching button fastens here!), two front pockets, and a single front folded pleat. They give all the understated elegance of a designer pair combined with the comfort and mobility of a pair of leggings – aka, the perfect combo. Their simple structure makes them the perfect everyday pair of trousers, easily matched with an oversized cashmere jumper, a shirt or a casual tee for an off-duty look. Plus, they can be dressed up with a colour-block heel or given a more down-to-earth feel with a pair of canvas pumps or trainers. In short, it’s likely that if you see us this side of Christmas, we’ll be wearing them.
