When leaving the house, we now have to check we have our hand sanitiser and mask as well as the usual necessities such as our phones and purses. And while compulsory and important, wearing a mask can come with its own set of challenges, most notably that of maskne. Maskne is a brand new phenomenon that saw many of us suffer from breakouts, sore spots, dry areas and more, due to increased mask usage. The lower half of our face has really been suffering, and needs that extra TLC. Brands have responded by creating specially designed products such as maskne mists and sheet masks for the lower face, and our demand for good, effective skincare has skyrocketed; so much so that Boots has even seen expert skincare sales up 39 per cent directly due to maskne. The demand shot up in July 2020, which is when it became compulsory for anyone over the age of 11 to wear a face mask on public transport and in communal spaces in England and Wales. As well as this increase in search for reliable skincare, Boots has also seen demand for the Boots Online Acne Clinic double over the past year. ‘“Maskne” is a broad term that covers all skin conditions caused by an increased use of face masks,’ explains Melissa Dadgar, Boots UK Pharmacist. ‘This can include everything from irritation, caused by friction due to a mask rubbing against the skin, to clogged pores from the trapped moisture and sebum that can build up when you wear a face covering for a long period of time.’ Boots Beauty Specialist, Selin Mustafa, added: ‘There are simple steps that can be followed to help prevent your skin reacting to your mask, including, moisturising your skin to help reduce friction and washing your face as soon as your get home.
