YOU Magazine Fashion Beauty Celebrity Health Life Relationships Horoscopes Food Interiors Travel Home Life These are the most complained about TV moments of 2022 so far By You Magazine - September 2, 2022 If 2022 has given us anything, it’s some pretty stellar television. From the most gripping BBC dramas to the Netflix shows we couldn’t stop talking about, there’s been plenty of telly to keep us busy. Of course, with the amount of TV we get nowadays, there comes a lot of controversy too, and TV regulatory authority Ofcom receives complaints from viewers when they feel television shows step out of line. There was one show in particular that bothered people this year: Love Island. The reality show received a total of 6001 complaints in 2022, making it the most complained about programme of the year so far. Love Island received its most complaints – a total of 2481 – on the July 17 following the explosive ‘Movie Night’ episode. During the episode, some of the islanders’ antics during Casa Amor were revealed a big screen to the entire villa, and Luca Bish accused Gemma Owen of ‘flirting’ with Billy Brown, despite her insistence that she was not entertaining his advances. REX The second most complained about show was Good Morning Britain, which landed a total of 1221 complaints, with the majority of these stemming from February 15 when presenter Richard Madeley was accused of belittling the death threats made to Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer. In third place, presenter Jeremy Vine received 1038 complaints for several episodes throughout the year, including comments on Russian soldiers and a segment on misinformation surrounding the Covid-19 vaccination. Love Island‘s spin-off show, Love Island: Aftersun, came in at fourth place on the list, as 427 complaints were lodged when host Laura Whitmore and the panellists discussed Ekin-Su’s behaviour with bombshell George in Casa Amore, which led to accusations of ‘slut shaming’ from some. Other shows to make up the top 10 included Gogglebox, Loose Women and This Morning. Of course, we’re only two-thirds of the way through the year, so there is still plenty of time for more gaffes and controversial comments to come. But, while the most complained about TV moments of 2022 are still to be confirmed, the 2021 list was quite the rollicking ride. See below for last year’s list. The top 10 most complained about TV moments of 2021… 1 Piers Morgan’ s disbelief of Meghan Markle’ s mental health – Good Morning Britain Rex Features You might not be surprised to see Piers Morgan features a few times in this list, as does Good Morning Britain. The former host’s comments about the Duchess of Sussex’s interview with Oprah Winfrey took the top spot for the most complained about TV moment of the year. In particular, the complaints rolled in about Piers saying he ‘didn’t believe a word’ when Meghan opened up to Oprah about her mental health struggles. He later stormed off the Good Morning Britain set while filming and eventually quit. 2 Faye’ s explosive argument with Teddy – Love Island As much as Love Island occupies a big part of our lives during the summer, it doesn’t come without its fair share of dodgy scenes. The episode in question aired on 6 August and received 24,921 complaints. The majority of the people who wrote in mentioned Faye Winter’s aggressive argument with her partner on the show, Teddy Soares. In an episode that followed, Faye apologised to Teddy and said: ‘I am really sorry for the way I spoke to you. There’s no excuse for the way I spoke to you or how I raised my voice and no one should have someone speak to them like that.’ And now, the couple are still together. Stars such as Simon Cowell and Charlotte Crosby featured in the episodes, which looked into the ‘facial flaws of the famous’ (according to its tagline). Charlotte stood up for herself on Instagram by posting a lengthy statement, explaining the dangers and insensitivity of the show. The interview received 6,486 complaints to Ofcom. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex discussed their decision to step down as active members of the royal family and their move to the US. Prince Harry mentioned feelings of being ‘trapped’ in the royal family, while Meghan opened up about having suicidal thoughts. It was also revealed that someone in the royal family had made comments about the colour of Archie’s skin. ITV 5 The Casa Amor postcard – Love Island Yep, Love Island is back on the list and it’s to do with Faye and Teddy, again. The episode which aired on 28 July received 4,337 complaints and featured the women in the main villa seeing a postcard from Casa Amor. The postcard showed pictures of what the men were up to, including a snap of Teddy kissing Casa Amor contestant Clarisse Juliettè. Those who wrote in thought it was an attempt to sabotage Faye and Teddy’s relationship. He pointed out her ‘miniskirt’ and asked her to stand up to show the viewers what she was wearing. Receiving 3,249 complaints, the episode also featured Piers clashing with presenter Alex Beresford over the Meghan and Harry interview and walking off set. 8 Dr Hilary criticises fake Covid-19 leaflet – Good Morning Britain Yet another one for Dr Hilary and Good Morning Britain. This time, Dr Hilary criticised a fake leaflet about Covid and host Richard Madeley then tore it up. The episode received 2,632 complaints. 9 ‘ Ditching unvaccinated friends’ – Good Morning Britain This controversial section of the TV show aired on 1 June and was titled ‘Ditching unvaccinated friends?’ The feature received 2,104 complaints. 10 ‘ How to lose the lockdown pounds’ – This Morning Rex Features The segment of This Morning that sparked outrage was called ‘How to lose the lockdown pounds’. Showing on 26 February, 1,942 complaints were made when hosts Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary spoke to Dr Michael Mosley about weight-loss tactics, such as only eating 800-1,000 calories a day.
