No better time to catch up on the new releases on our favourite TV channels and streaming services. From the highly-rated The Lord of the Rings series to classics such as The Great British Bake Off, and the Marilyn Monroe biopic Blonde, here’s what to get excited about on telly this month… September 2022 TV guide The Lord of the Rings The Rings of Power Prime Video When? Episodes will drop weekly from Friday September 2 Where? Prime Video More than 20 years after the first Lord of the Rings movie was released in theatres, the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age return to our screens in the most expensive television series ever made, with a reported cost of $465M for just the first season. Set thousands of years before the events in the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit film trilogies, expect stunning visuals, beautiful costumes, and an incredible ensemble cast from this eight-episode fantasy drama. Wedding Season Disney+ When? 8 September Where? Disney+ Disney+ is releasing its first-ever UK Original series. Rom-com thriller Wedding Season tells the story of Katie (Rosa Salazar) and Stefan (Gavin Drea) who fall for each other at a wedding and begin an affair, despite the fact Katie is about to get married. On the night of her wedding, Katie’s new husband and his entire family are found dead. The police think Stefan did it, Stefan starts questioning Katie, and over the course of eight action-packed episodes, they both try to prove their innocence. The Great British Bake Off Channel 4 When? Episodes will drop weekly from Tuesday September 13 Where? Channel 4 It’s September so that can only mean one thing: The Great British Bake Off is back. As usual, we don’t have a lot of information on what’s to come, but we do know that hosts Noel Fielding and Matt Lucas will once again comfort the contestants in the tent, and Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith return as judges. As for the challenges, no word yet on what they will be, but we can only pray for the bakers that Chocolate Week wasn’t filmed during the extreme heatwave in July. This England Sky When? 21 September Where? Sky Atlantic and NOW The most talked-about TV release this month, This England will recount Boris Johnson’s tumultuous first months as Prime Minister – from the Brexit fallout to the first wave of the Coronavirus pandemic, as well as his controversial personal and political life, everything is covered. The six-part series is co-written and directed by Michael Winterbottom and will see Kenneth Branagh take on the role of Boris Johnson, Ophelia Lovibond as Carrie Johnson, and Andrew Buchan as Matt Hancock. Blonde Netflix When? 28 September Where? Netflix Based on the bestselling novel by Joyce Carol Oates, Netflix’s highly-anticipated Marilyn Monroe biopic is a fictionalised take on the life of the iconic American actress and pinup model. Blonde, which is set to premiere at Venice Film Festival this week, stars No Time to Die actress Ana de Armas as Marilyn Monroe. The film has been getting lots of buzz – not only because it was given a rare adults-only rating for “some sexual content” – but also because of de Armas’ striking resemblance to Monroe. Hocus Pocus 2 Disney+ When? 30 September Where? Disney+ On All Hallow’s Eve in modern-day Salem, a trio of high-school students light the Black Flame Candle and accidentally resurrect the Sanderson sisters. After twenty-nine years, the wicked witches (Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy are all reprising their iconic roles) are looking for revenge. If you’ve seen the original, a Halloween favourite, you can probably guess how this one will go, but nevertheless you’ll be in for a good dose of humour, and maybe a scare.
