YOU Magazine Fashion Beauty Celebrity Health Life Relationships Horoscopes Food Interiors Travel Home Life Editor’ s letter Why life s boring bits are actually the best By You Magazine - September 6, 2020 Hands up if this sounds familiar: you’re midway through a Saturday night dinner with your long-term other half when you realise you’ve spent the past 20 minutes discussing re-grouting the bathroom. ‘It’s happened,’ you think. ‘We have become that couple. We have nothing left to talk about. We will start asking friends who visit which route they took – then wince and make noises about roadworks when they mention the North Circular. And I could have sworn it’s only five minutes since we were 20-somethings drinking cocktails on a rooftop in Ibiza…’ Well, after reading Julia Llewellyn Smith’s heartbreakingly raw interview with Kate Garraway, I will never, ever dismiss how lucky I am to talk about mundane household chores with my husband. In March this year, Kate and her husband of almost 15 years, Derek Draper, were having one of those everyday discussions over brunch; just a week later, Derek was in a medically induced coma suffering from Covid-19. As I write, he is still in a minimally conscious state while Kate is coping and holding up their two children by channelling Derek’s ‘silly sense of humour’. I find her resilience in the face of such fear and uncertainty superhuman, but she just says, ‘As a mum I can’t just go to bed and cry for 24 hours’. There has been so much grief and pain in 2020, we’ve had to resort to clichés such as: ‘It makes you realise what’s important’ because, frankly, nothing else makes much sense. While it’s not an easy read – she doesn’t sugar-coat the horror or the heartache – I can’t thank Kate enough for sharing her story. In showing how life can throw any of us a curveball without warning, she really has reminded us what matters. And it’s not cocktails in fancy bars; it’s being able to ask your husband whose turn it is to put the bins out.
