YOU Magazine Fashion Beauty Celebrity Health Life Relationships Horoscopes Food Interiors Travel Home Celebrity A Dirty Dancing film sequel is coming By Kanika Banwait - May 11, 2022 There are some films so iconic that you can say one line from them and, whether you’ve seen the movie or not, you know which one it is. ‘Nobody puts baby in the corner,’ from Dirty Dancing is one such quote, and we’re sure super fans of the 80s cult classic are able to recall many more than that. They’ll also be delighted to know that, 35 years after the original film was released, a Dirty Dancing film sequel in the works. Rex News of the film came about last year, but some more details about it have recently been released. Jennifer Grey, who played Baby in the film, is set to reprise her role and produce the sequel. It will be directed by Jonathan Levine, who is best known for the hit Amazon Prime series Nine Perfect Strangers. ‘While the original Dirty Dancing has always been one of my favourite films, I never imagined I would direct the sequel. Through co-writing it, I fell in love with the characters (new and old), the world of 1990s Catskills New York, and the music, which will range from songs from the original movie to 90s hip-hop,’ Jonathan said to Deadline. He continued: ‘I can’t wait to… bring this beautiful story of summer and romance and dancing to a generation of new fans. And to the longtime ones, I promise we will not ruin your childhood. The director also revealed that Jennifer Grey may not be the only familiar Dirty Dancing face in the sequel. He said: ‘The most important thing for us was having Jennifer on board. She is an invaluable collaborator. We’re going to try to involve as many people from the original as is appropriate. We want to be respectful in every way.’ Of course, fans will miss Patrick Swayze in the film. But Jonathan is keen to make sure the actor, who died in 2009, has a presence. ‘This film exists in a dialogue with the original. We want to introduce this story to a whole new generation. That said, Johnny’s absence looms large over the story, so it’s a coming-of-age story but also a coming-of-age for Baby’s character in a way,’ he said. Rex We don’t know huge amounts about the new movie yet, but we do know it’ll be set in the 90s and will follow Baby’s story as she crosses another young woman’s coming-of-age journey at Kellerman’s summer camp. We couldn’t forget the soundtrack to Dirty Dancing even if we tried, but some of the original songs – like Hungry Eyes – are set to feature again. The film is due to go into production later this year, for release in 2024.
