YOU Magazine Fashion Beauty Celebrity Health Life Relationships Horoscopes Food Interiors Travel Home Travel Hotel review The Athenaeum Hotel London By Nicole Gray - August 16, 2022 Nestled in Mayfair, The Athenaeum Hotel offers not only views of rustling leaves in Royal Green Park but also the bustle of central London right on its doorstep. Dating back to 1850, The Athenaeum Hotel began life as Hope House, the elegant private abode of MP Henry Hope. It later evolved from a Victorian gentleman’s club to art deco apartments into the iconic hotel it stands as today. The Athenaeum Hotel review Rooms & facilities If you can, go for a room with a view. You won’t regret it as they are flooded with light during the day, and let you see some lovely greenery in the park if you wish to sit by the window with a good book for even a few moments of your stay. The rooms are modern and stylish with a touch of eccentricity. They are perfect for a family break or romantic getaway in equal measure. Staff at The Athenaeum are equally more than happy to bring a bottle of Champagne or a cot to your room. You need some toys for your little one? No problem? A selection of chocolates? Of course. If you want something a bit more home-from-home, then check out, or indeed check in to, the Residence. This comes with the same access to all the hotel’s facilities, but you get to enter through your own front door and enjoy a California King size bed; pop-up bunk beds; a separate living area, with a dining table and kitchenette; and a bathroom with underfloor heating and smart toilet. And speaking of facilities, make sure to ping the spa on your radar. Whether you want to cure your jet lag or take a break from shopping, the bubbling hot tub or treatment will set you right. Just make sure to book in advance. Oh, and if you want in on a little secret, ask about ‘The View’ – you may or may not just get yourself on the VIP list. Food & Drink It goes without saying that it would be wise to fuel up on a full English breakfast or a healthy omelette before you pound the pavements of the UK capital. But if you’ve clocked up the miles through your trip already or, indeed, are anyone looking to ease off the sightseeing for a couple of hours, settle in for the award-winning afternoon tea. You’ll obviously need your sweet tooth, but vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options are available. Any way you want it, just make sure to not fall out over whether jam or cream goes on the scone first. The chic restaurant, 116, also serves a beautiful seasonal menu in its warm and cosy setting, though you could sit on the terrace if the weather holds. And if you are really blessed with sunshine, the team will even put a picnic together for you on request. What to do nearby Though you might have read guides that wax lyrical about ‘hidden London’ the best sites here are, quite frankly, hidden in plain sight. Royal Green Park is quite literally across the road, which you can stroll through to be at the gates of Buckingham Palace within minutes. Hyde Park is a sharp right and its gates sit very much on the corner, also just a few minutes’ walk away. Take a left out of the front doors and you will be soon soaked in the neon lights of Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square. Not to mention that you are a stone’s throw from shopping central; whether that be New Bond, Regent or Oxford Street, you’ll be ticking off some serious squares on the Monopoly board.
