YOU Magazine Fashion Beauty Celebrity Health Life Relationships Horoscopes Food Interiors Travel Home Celebrity Lisa Kudrow discusses the body image issues she experienced during the Friends years By Sophie Hines - August 11, 2022 Lisa Kudrow may be best known for her bubbly, quirky character of Phoebe on Friends, but in real life playing the role wasn’t all laughs for the actress. In fact, as she revealed in a recent interview, it gave Lisa a few body hang-ups – hardly surprising in an era when body-shaming of celebrities was rife and thinness was held up as the ideal to an even greater extent than now. Speaking on the Podcrushed podcast, which is co-hosted by actor Penn Badgley, Lisa said seeing her body on screen was quite a shock. ‘It wasn’t until Friends that I realised, “Oh, I don’t look like I thought how I thought I looked” and that’s what was so jarring. ‘Seeing myself on the show and seeing myself in clothes and seeing Courteney and Jennifer, I thought, “Oh, they know tailoring so they can discuss it with the costume designer about where exactly to take it in”,’ she said. As a result, Lisa asked her female co-stars to join her at fittings so they could help advise on costume alterations, but then she realised her issues were ‘not just about tailoring’. ‘I’m not trying to say I was overweight’ Lisa added. ‘I was not. I just had no idea of the actual shape of my body.’ The actress explained that her attitude started to change in late thirties and forties. ‘I just realised it’s okay, this is just what I look like [and] that’s okay. I mean, do what you need to do to be healthy but if this is your body, it’s okay.’ Wise words indeed!
