Claudette photographed by Francois. She was the muse for his new collection. Image: Francois Nars When it comes to his profession and his eponymous brand, make-up artist François Nars credits his mother Claudette with much importance, but perhaps not in the way you might think. ‘My mother was never much into make-up. She was lucky to be what you would call a natural beauty,’ he explains. She was apparently regularly mistaken for Sophia Loren. ‘I remember growing up, I’d see her apply a bit of mascara, some eyeshadow to bring out her eyes, she loved blush, and her lips were natural and lightly glossed. What she really taught me is that less is more and it’s stuck with me my whole career. I’m very careful with products such as foundations and powders. I don’t like too much coverage.’ Francois with his mum Claudette, 2004. Image: Condé Nast USA These days, Claudette is ‘totally addicted to make-up’ and now they have collaborated on a collection named after her. At first, François says, his mother told him she was too old for such things. ‘But it was not a question of age,’ he explains. ‘She inspired me from the start and was the first person I applied make-up on – my first model.’ Audacious Lipstick in Mathilde, £26 For their collaboration, Claudette was involved all the way through, testing sample shades and making all the final choices: ‘Because her name is on it, she had to approve everything’. The collection includes Audacious lipstick (£26), with a satin finish in shades that include a spiced rose, taupe nude and rust red, and a matt version, too, in six options from a pink nude to a scarlet red. There’s also a Cheek Duo (£37) and St Germain Des Près Eyeshadow Palette (£36) in hues of taupe, rust, champagne and cinnamon. All are shades, François says, that should be worn by women as they age. ‘I really encourage older ladies not to be afraid of make-up – if it’s well applied and you use the right colours and textures, you can look ten years younger.’ Cheek Duo in Croisette and Ninotchka, £37 Is Claudette thrilled to have her own collection? ‘Of course, wouldn’t you be?’ laughs François. ‘She did say we should have done this 20 years ago but, you know, better late than never.’ The Claudette Collection is available from spacenk.com. Claudette’ s beauty golden rules Love and protect your skin. Cleanse, exfoliate, hydrate and moisturise. Always remove make-up before you go to bed. Use SPF all year round and don’t forget to wear a hat and sunglasses in the summer. Less is more. Always use make-up to enhance your own beauty. Keep some sheerness and freshness to it. Mind your lifestyle. Drink a lot of water, eat a healthy diet, get enough sleep, stay active – exercise, if you can, or just go for a walk. Stay positive and don’t forget to laugh – it will keep you young for ever. From face packs to cat naps… Celebrities reveal the beauty secrets their mums swear by. ‘Stay off the booze, sleep on your back and use good old soap and water. All of which I’ve obviously ignored!’ Lisa Snowdon. ‘Mum is obsessed with homemade facials. Yogurt, honey and a dash of turmeric. She’ll start every conversation with, “Have you put a face pack on?’” Anita Rani. ‘My mum’s biggest beauty tip was, “Get back into bed and sleep – don’t worry about what you look like.” Napping is the key to everything. If I’ve slept like an ancient cat, everything else takes care of itself.’ Claudia Winkleman.
