So when we heard Downton‘s creator, Julian Fellowes, was the mind behind yet another drama set in the past, we were pretty excited. The new TV show is called The Gilded Age, but unlike many period dramas we’ve watched, this one is set in America. It has a great cast, full of big names and stars in the making. And of course, the costumes are equally as exciting. This is everything you need to know about the new series… Who stars in The Gilded Age Meryl Streep’s daughter, Louisa Jacobson, will star as Marian Brook who is the protagonist of The Gilded Age. Cynthia Nixon, AKA Miranda Hobbs from Sex and the City, has been cast as the protagonist’s wealthy aunt Ada Brook. Christine Baranski, from The Good Wife and Mamma Mia, will play the protagonist’s other aunt, Agnes van Rhijn. What’ s the plot The Gilded Age is set in 1882 in New York, during a period of economic change, huge fortunes and loss, according to HBO. Marian Brook is the struggling orphan daughter of a Union general, who relocates from Pennsylvania to New York to live with her aunts Agnes and Ada. Marian becomes involved in a social war with one of her aunts and her rich neighbours, in the company of Peggy Scott – a successful African-American woman. One of these rich neighbours is railroad tycoon George Russell (played by Morgan Spector), who is married to a determined woman named Bertha (played by Carrie Coon). Marian has to choose whether to conform to the traditional society or break the rules to live life as she pleases. Watch the full-length trailer here: Julian Fellowes revealed that a huge amount of research went into creating the drama when speaking to The Los Angeles Times in 2016. ‘These people were extraordinary. You can see why they frightened the old guard, because they saw no boundaries,’ he said of the characters in The Gilded Age. ‘They wanted to build a palace, they built a palace. They wanted to buy a yacht, they bought a yacht. And the old guard in New York weren’t like that at all, and suddenly this whirlwind of couture descended on their heads. They redesigned being rich.’ When’ s it on The Gilded Age is set to air on 25 January 2022, and can be watched on Sky Atlantic.
