YOU Magazine Fashion Beauty Celebrity Health Life Relationships Horoscopes Food Interiors Travel Home Beauty Modern versions of The Rachel 90s layers are being embraced by celebrities and influencers By Sophie Hines - July 27, 2022 What goes around comes around – certainly in terms of fashion and beauty trends, with nineties and noughties looks suddenly reappearing in the early 2020s, much to the surprise of those of us who lived through them the first time. While there are plenty of returning trends we refuse to get on board with – low-rise jeans we’re looking at you – others are more welcome. Take, for example, the collective nineties love of layered hair, best epitomised by ‘the Rachel’ haircut, which made Friends star Jennifer Aniston a true icon of the times. Rex Features Layers have taken a bit of a backseat in recent years, with blunt cuts and choppy bobs leading the forefront of on-trend hair. However, voluminous layers have been trending among Gen Z-ers on TikTok recently, with one influencer, Shay Sullivan, getting a huge response for her ‘iconic’ haircut, a blend between Rachel Green and Brigitte Bardot. @shaysullivann A little behind of scenes of this iconic haircut!! Music For a Sushi Restaurant – Harry Styles The look received thousands of comments, including many who said it reminded them of the Friends character. ‘The Rachel? But like jazzed up? It’s gorgeous’ said one. Explaining what she asked for at the hairdressers, Shay said: ‘I got lots of layers all around like I usually do, and then really intense face framing because I really like that dramatic look. Before I had straight-across bangs but I really wanted them more curtain this time, so she just touched up the shape and made them more slanted.’ It’s not just influencers getting in on the trend. Jodie Comer – one of the coolest actresses around – is making a strong case for the return of long layers with her latest look, and we can totally get on board. Dubbed a ‘modern take on the Rachel’, Jodie’s new haircut was the handiwork of hairdresser to the stars Sam McKnight, who knows a thing or two about starting a hair trend. He created Jodie’s choppy, layered look in his kitchen, and there was lots of positive feedback when the actress then shared the results on Instagram. Sam McKnight shared a photo of Jodie in the crowd on Instagram, saying ‘Jodie’s new 90s layers…get their first outing. #Coolgirl on a hot day’.
