YOU Magazine Fashion Beauty Celebrity Health Life Relationships Horoscopes Food Interiors Travel Home Life The NHS has launched a series of free HIIT and pilates workouts By You Magazine - May 26, 2020 Since we’ve been under lockdown we’ve all had more time on our hands, which has led many of us to spend more time working out and getting fit (which is just as well, considering the amount of baking we’ve also been doing). Whether it’s a morning run, lunchtime walk, yoga in your living room or a weekend cycle ride, we’re doing everything we can to source those exercise-induced endorphins and get outside in the sunshine (two instant mood-boosters). Getty Images But with gyms everywhere closed, we’ve had to get a bit creative with our workouts. From local Pilates studios teaching virtual classes via Zoom to gym chains such as Frame launching online memberships with access to a huge variety of on-demand classes – and let’s not forget Joe Wicks‘ daily PE lessons, which have been a huge hit with people of all ages. Getty Images And now we can look forward to a series of free NHS-approved workout videos. Through partnering with Instructor Live, there are two courses, Introduction to HIIT and Introduction to Pilates, both free to watch as many times as you like via YouTube. Suitable for all levels, from beginners to advanced, workouts range from 10-45 minutes and new episodes will be released every Tuesday and Thursday, so you’ll never get bored of doing the same workout over and over again. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wa0Jtlh3J2s&list=PLnhASgDToTktRmHUwRwrwosx1514WR2FU&index=2&t=0s In the world of fitness, it can be difficult to know who to trust, but as these workouts have the NHS seal of approval, you can be sure that these videos are a safe and efficient way to get fit. By following these workouts, the NHS promise that you will see benefits such as: Improved fitness Improved core strength Improved flexibility, balance and body control Increased muscle tone and weight loss. The two courses compliment each other perfectly – HIIT (high intensity interval training) has been proven to be a very efficient form of cardiovascular exercise, which is great for improving heart health and losing weight, while pilates will help to tone muscles and improve flexibility. Getty Images The NHS says: ‘Regular exercise has been proven to help reduce the risk of chronic illnesses such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and stroke. Research shows that physical activity can also boost self-esteem, energy, mood and sleep quality.’ If you’re looking for even more ways to raise your heart rate, the NHS’s online Fitness Studio is full of even more workout videos, where you can find niche exercise routines such as arm and ab workouts, chair-based pilates and even belly dancing.
