YOU Magazine Fashion Beauty Celebrity Health Life Relationships Horoscopes Food Interiors Travel Home Beauty Edwina Ings-Chambers Why vitamin C is my latest squeeze By You Magazine - November 10, 2019 When it comes to a fresher complexion, super-ingredient vitamin C is the one. Vitamin C is one of my closest skincare allies. This big hero ingredient really perks up my complexion, evens out my skin tone and generally has me looking brighter and fresher – it also softens wrinkles. Plus, it’s an antioxidant, so it helps to protect from free radicals (pesky molecules that damage cells, causing premature ageing) and boosts collagen production, which helps to keep skin firm. If you’re a skincare follower, you’ll know that vitamin C must be formulated well to ensure it doesn’t degenerate from exposure to light and air – or, worse, become a pro-oxidant and potentially lead to collagen destruction. So here are my favourite products… Pixeleyes My main love is Medik8 C-Tetra Serum (£35, medik8.com) – a brand I really trust. I apply it after cleansing but before moisturising and always see a big difference in my skin when I’m using it compared to when I’m not (usually when it has run out and I haven’t got around to replacing it). The new Tandem Brightening Booster (£22, tandemskincare.co.uk) is now a close second. It is ultra lightweight and oil-based, absorbs quickly and leaves skin looking much happier. It’s formulated with kakadu plum (rich in vitamin C) and squalane for a smooth texture. Both this and Medik8’s serum are vegan but Tandem is also Cosmos Natural and Organic certified and has the Leaping Bunny seal of approval. If you’re keen on organic products I’ve also really enjoyed using Kora Organics Noni Bright Vitamin C Serum (£60, spacenk.com). It feels like more of a regular skincare serum so if that’s your preferred texture it’s worth trying (it is also Cosmos certified). La Roche-Posay Pure Vitamin C10 Serum (£38, boots.com) has more of a typical serum viscosity but gives good results. However, the packaging annoys me a little as I find the pipette on the chunky side and that some product gets wasted around the neck of the bottle as I try to fit the dispenser back in. Elizabeth Arden has gone super practical with its Vitamin C Ceramide Capsules Radiance Renewal Serum (from £42, elizabetharden.co.uk). The capsule format is easy to transport and, since they are hermetically sealed, each one’s content is protected from contamination by the air and light (they are also 100 per cent plant- and mineral-based and biodegradable, so can be put in a compost bin). The contents are incredibly potent, too (up to 178 times more than some traditional vitamin C formulations), so this is serious oomph for your money. This Works has a very different approach with its Morning Expert Vitamin C Power Mask (£39, thisworks.com). Part cleanser, part exfoliator – thanks to the vitamin C granules in the formula – you massage it on to your face and then leave for up to ten minutes as a mask before rinsing off. A bit too involved for me to use every day but great when I have the time.
