But according to scientists, it could be what you need to cool you down and get rid of that unconformable, sweaty feeling that has been preventing us all from having a good night’s sleep. Not convinced? Hear us out… Getty Images While there has been plenty to enjoy recently thanks to our surprise summer climate – sunbathing in the garden, a sun-soaked daily stroll through the local park – the British heatwave has also become detrimental to our sleeping pattern, with many struggling to dose off at night due to the soaring temperatures in their homes. However, Ollie Jay, a researcher at University of Ottawa’s School of Human Kinetics, knows just how to combat the heat and believe it or not, it involves drinking a hot drink before bedtime. As part of a 2012 study on body heat, Jay conducted a series of experiments to find out the effects hot drinks have on our overall body temperature. During his study, he and his team found that drinking something hot when temperatures are high actually cools you down as it results ‘in a lower amount of heat stored inside your body.’ Getty Images As the hot liquid makes contact with the body’s temperature receptors, the brain tells the body to produce more sweat. That sweat then cools on the surface of the skin, which ultimately makes our entire body feel cooler. However, it’s important to note that this only works if there is a slight breeze in the room to allow the sweat to evaporate, which also means you shouldn’t wear long sleeves and trousers as this could block the evaporation process. So, there you have it – you could ditch the tall glass of ice cold water on your bedside table and replace it with a hot mug of tea. Or even better, a pint of warm milk, which is said to not only cool you down but to help your body produce serotonin and melatonin hormones that help you to sleep. Just don’t forget to crack open a window and wear minimal clothing to bed for the process to work. We might just have to test this out… RELATED ARTICLESMORE FROM AUTHOR Everything we know about The Crown season 5 Aldi s exercise equipment is on sale with up to 50% off The best Halloween events for 2022 across the UK Popular in Life The You magazine team reveal their New Year s resolutions December 31, 2021 Susannah Taylor The TLC tools your body will love January 23, 2022 How to stop living in fear February 6, 2022 Susannah Taylor My pick of the fittest leggings February 27, 2022 Women’ s Prize for Fiction 2022 winner announced June 17, 2022 These BBC dramas are returning for a second series June 30, 2022 Susannah Taylor gives the lowdown on nature s little helper – CBD April 17, 2022 The baby names that are banned across the world April 27, 2022 The Queen has released her own emojis May 26, 2022 Sally Brompton horoscopes 27th June-3rd July 2022 June 26, 2022 Popular CategoriesFood2704Life2496Fashion2240Beauty1738Celebrity1261Interiors684 Sign up for YOUMail Thanks for subscribing Please check your email to confirm (If you don't see the email, check the spam box) Fashion Beauty Celebrity Life Food Privacy & Cookies T&C Copyright 2022 - YOU Magazine.
